A Rival Bakery Leads to Murder

It's no secret to Hannah's friends that Hannah is no fan of Shawna Lee Quinn. But that's especially true since Shawna opened the Magnolia Blossom Bakery right across the street from Hannah's own shop. Business is looking pretty poor, and if things don't change soon, Hannah and Lisa might have to close their doors.

On a happier note, Lisa and Herb's wedding day has finally arrived. So what if Shawna Lee has promised to bring her famous peach cobbler to the reception. It's only a minor dark cloud on an otherwise bright day. But Shawna Lee never makes it to the reception. Running by the bakeries afterward, Hannah finds Shawna Lee's dead body. With one of the best motives in town, Hannah knows she's got to act fast to make sure she doesn't wind up behind bars for a crime she didn't commit. But with most of the town at the wedding, who could have committed the murder?

Reading Sugar Cookie Murder, I thought to myself that Shawna Lee would make a great murder victim. Obviously great minds think alike. While the murder aspect starts out a little slowly, I really didn't mind because there was still plenty going on with these friends. And once Hannah finds the body, things really begin to pick up. Clues lead to a place I never would have imagined, but is absolute genius.

Any fan of the series will be pleased with the latest entry. If you aren't, I do recommend starting at the beginning since you really need to read them in order to gain the full appreciation of the characters. I can't wait to visit with them again.

I'd give this 6 stars if I could

Joanne Fluke weaves a wonderful tale of murder, love, and (maybe) betrayal, spiced with humor, and, of course, mouth-watering treats. There is just the right amount of recipes in this book (I felt the previous book had too many recipes at the end, shortening the story).

The story progresses swiftly, the characters are well defined, and there are many twists, as just as you are sure one person must be the murderer, you find another person who may be even more likely to have done it.

Another murder from a few years ago and over 1000 miles away is woven in with the main story, adding to the excitement, and to the suspect list.

Joanne does an excellent job of wrapping up every loose end and providing closure to every situation that came up, except the enjoyable ongoing struggle of will it be Mike or Norman who wins Hannah's heart.

This was a very satisfying and enjoyable read.

LOVED THIS ONE; LOVE THIS SERIES. IF YOU LIKE THEM READ THEM AND IF YOU DON'T, THEN DON'T.

Well, I have to say that I found this one to be the best of the series so far. Now reader take note...this series of cozy mysteries is not for everyone. For lack of a better word to describe them I am forced to use the words "a cozy, cozy." By that I mean they are as about a cozy as you can get. I love these books. They fall into the category I call my comfort reads.

In this tale our heroine, Hannah Swensen is faced with competition from a new bakery that has been established across the street. Simply put, since the bakery is owned and operated by two sisters who are willing to operate at a loss for at least a year, they are driving Hannah out of business. To make matters worse, there are strong indications that one of the two men in Hannah's life, Mike the cop, is becoming or has been involved with one of the sisters! Of course there is the problem of Hannah finding one of the sisters murdered, shot, lying on the floor of her rival bakery and Hannah becomes a suspect herself...along with about half of the town. Will the Magnolia Blossom Bakery put Hannah's bakery The Cookie Jar out of business? Will Mike be lured away from Hannah? Who killed one of the owners of the rival bakery? Will Mike the cop or Norman the town Dentist ask for Hannah's hand in marriage and more importantly, will Hannah accept either offer? Will Hannah's mother be swept off her feet by the English Nobleman she is infatuated with? Will Hannah's cat manage to finally dig through the locked closet and have unlimited access to the cat food (The Mother Load) stashed there and is her cat actually keeping pet mice in Hannah's closet and feeding them? These are some of the issues being faced by our rather unique baker.

Now for my take on some of the critical comments this series has received: Yes, Hannah can be annoying at times. To be quite frank, I know of no one in real life who is not annoying from time to time. The author has been quite persistent in keeping all of her characters true to form throughout the book. This is one of the things I like; one of the things I look for, i.e. consistency. I know what I am getting. Secondly, I not that a lot of people find the fact that Hannah has two men on the line and is string both of them along not realistic, or at the very least, tiresome and a bit odd. I have no problems with this. I read literally hundreds of book in this genre where a man strings along multiple women and no one seems to find this a bit put offish. A good example is the wonderful cozy Hamish Macbeth Series by M.C. Beaton. Our intrepid Scottish policeman has been stinging the same multiple women and a new one each book, along for at least 26 novels now and no one seems to blink over that. Thirdly, folks seem to be annoyed over the lack of any blatant sexual activity in these books; as a matter of fact, they are indeed rather prudish. I find this wonderfully refreshing in so many ways. Hey, I enjoy a good read dealing with vivid sex and violence every now and then and goodness knows I have enough to choose from if that strikes my fancy at any given time. Like most things though, that gets old real fast too. Forth...No Hannah is not a beauty queen. She is a bit over weight, has wild red hair, no taste in clothing what so ever and is indeed quite outspoken and a bit of a know it all; in other words, she is about like 90 percent of most of the people I know, myself included. As to the main characters aversion to cell phones, computers, fancy cars, etc., well to be quite frank, I share those very feelings and if I could run my life without them as Hannah seems able to do, then I would be right there with her.

This work, like the others in the series is well written. Violence is kept to a very minimum, there is no profanity (again, refreshing), the characters are quite believable and the mystery portion of the story, which is quite secondary to these books, is logical. We are also treated to fourteen new recipes, two of which I have tried and they are delicious. It is filled with the old regular cast of characters with a few new ones thrown in. Again, it is like reading about family after three or four books in the series.

Again, these books are not for everyone. We certainly are not talking the Bronte Sisters here or the works of someone like Jane Austen, no far from it. But what we are given is a few hours of delightful reading that is simply fun! You really do not have to expend a lot of thought energy with these books; they are sort of a type of mind candy...or in this case, brain cookies. These books are a wonderful escape into a far mellower world than we live in. I like that.

And by the way...I am pulling for Norman the Dentist.

Finding Flow

Besides having more vowels in his name than any other researcher in the field of positive psychology, Mih�ly Cs�kszentmih�lyi is probably best known for his book "Flow". So what exactly is flow?

Well, there are short and long ways to define the concept of flow. The short way is to tell you that flow is roughly the equivalent to what most people refer to as being "in the zone" or "in the groove". More elaborate definitions might be that it is "the state in which people are so involved in an activity that nothing else seems to matter; the experience itself is so enjoyable that people do it even at great cost, for the sheer state of doing it."

Being such a desirable state, flow is naturally linked to happiness. The book feels that the path to happiness is a circuitous one that begins with one achieving control over the "contents of our consciousness". I'm taking that to mean that if I learn to find flow experiences, it will lead to greater happiness.

Know from the get-go that "Flow" is NOT a step-by-step book that gives you tips on how to be happy. Instead, the book summarizes years of research, so what you get when all is said and done, are general principles along with examples of how people have used them to transform their lives. The hope, then, is that you will have enough information in the book to make the transition from principles and theory, to actual practice.

In a nutshell, "Flow" is a unique and interesting book that examines the process of achieving happiness through the control of one's inner life and is a classic in it's field. Other positive psychology books I liked include "Finding Happiness in a Frustrating World".

Optimal Experience: Not One Destination

If anyone is seeking a "recipe" for "optimal experience" do not read this book. This book is not a step-by-step self-help guide. Neither is it a pedantic overview of psychological studies replete with statistical analyses, i.e., hard data, proving "flow" exists. The simplest way to summarize this book is, it describes how different people create meaning in life with full intention and focus and thereby achieve an ongoing state of satisfaction and sense of fulfillment.

The book begins with an overview of how people define and achieve happiness. Essentially, the author contends, most people are not happy because the universe was not created to make us happy but on the contrary, it serves to frustrate us and help us grow ... The primary focus of this book is to show us that "flow" states happen to people despite the challenges of the universe, it happens to people from all walks of life, from all cultures, throughout the world.

Flow is a state of consciousness which can be achieved on an individual path. It also has common elements which anyone who is experiencing the state can identify. The author examines the common experiences which people who are in a state of "flow" describe. It seems people who are in "flow" achieve a state of consciousness that is in harmony with their surroundings and feelings. They do not make distinctions between work and play ... people in "flow" create an inner state of being that brings them peace and fulfillment that is separate from their external environment. They are focused, what they do is meaningful and has purpose, they are absorbed in their activities and they have a sense of connection to their inner self and and also with others. The state called "flow" pertains to enjoyment and satisfaction with one's quality of life. The basis for the flow experience seems to be creating meaning and controlling consciousness where a state of unity exists which is consistent with a person's life themes. Some people experience it for minutes, some for hours, some for days on end ... evidently it can be sustained for long periods of time by some people. This book is highly recommended for anyone interested in the "psychology of being alive here and now."

Valuable Insights into the Mystery of Happiness

Flow are those inexplicable moments of indescribable happiness that we experience at rare intervals, when we are "surprised by joy." These precious moments seem to be gifts, almost accidental peak experiences in which life seems rich with meaning, joy and wonder. When and why do these magic episodes intrude upon our humdrum existences? Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi's answer may surprise you: "Contrary to what we usually believe, moments like these, the best moments of our lives, are not the passive, receptive, relaxing times ... The best moments of our lives usually occur when a person's body or mind is stretched to the limits in a voluntary moment to achieve something difficult and worthwhile. Optimal experience is thus something we make happen ... For each person there are thousands of opportunities, challenges to expand ourselves."

Csikszentmihalyi's theme is happiness. This philosopher-psychologist points out the Aristotelian concept that all other things we seek, riches, fame, power, etc. are valued only because we believe they will make us happy. Based upon decades of research on the mystery of happiness, Csikszentmihalyi defines it as moments of self-forgetfulness when we are totally absorbed in the process of life ... intervals of peak creativity and self-expression. He expands upon the research of Abraham Maslow and agrees that peak experiences are within the reach of us all. The theme of this book is the introduction of techniques to make this glad to be alive feeling occur more often. It may be stated that this book is no self-help step-by-step program, nor could it be. Each of us is plowing new snow, creating a path that no one else has traveled. The guidelines and the principles are here, but the journey into the sublime uncertainty of our destiny is individual and precious. Flow is one of several extraordinary contributions by this great mind.

Beyond Kabbalah...

If you've studied Crowley for even a few hours, you'll realize that you're not going to open this book and understand what he was getting at just by reading through the text a few times. This is undoubtedly a work that requires careful consideration of so many implicit elements. To list what you need to consider to get at "the deeper meaning" of this book, I'd have to sit here all day.
The interesting thing about this book is that you don't necessarily have to analyze the text thoroughly (though it's certainly worth it) to get something out of it. Some of the 'poems' evoke a good laugh, some are beautiful and inspiring and can easily become a personal gem of wisdom for the reader (for me, "The Mountaineer".)
When I first started getting into Crowley's writing, a friend recommended starting with the Book of Lies. Other friends naturally scoffed at the recommendation, and insisted I start with The Book of the Law. Now I wish I'd gone with the Book of Lies first, so that I could come back to it after reading other Crowley just to see how far I've come in the Great Work. Even if the Great Work isn't your goal, this book if nothing else is a fantastic conversation piece. I recommend it to not only occultists, but to all book lovers. It's fascinating.

Kindle edition is a mess.

I'm profoundly disappointed. This Kindle edition is just a "converted to eBook" version of the text transcriptions which have been on the internet since the '90s. Who authorized this? The current version at hermetic.com has been improved over the years to the point where this Kindle version is just a sad relic. The Book of Lies deserves a high quality Kindle version. Avoid this one.

RUSSELL’S FINAL SUMMATION OF HIS PHILOSOPHY OF KNOWLEDGE AND EPISTEMOLOGY

Bertrand Arthur William Russell (1872–1970) was an influential British philosopher, logician, mathematician, and political activist. In 1950, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature, in recognition of his many books such as A History of Western Philosophy, The Problems of Philosophy, Mysticism and Logic, Why I am Not a Christian, Religion and Science, The Philosophy of Logical Atomism, The Analysis of Mind, Our Knowledge of the External World, etc. [NOTE: page numbers refer to the 525-page Touchstone paperback edition.]

He wrote in the Preface to this 1948 book, “The following pages are addressed not only or primarily to professional philosophers but to that much larger public which is interested in philosophical questions without being willing or able to devote more than a limited amount of time to considering them… I think it is unfortunate that during the last hundred and sixty years or so philosophy has come to be regarded almost as technical as mathematics. Logic, it must be admitted, is technical in the same way as mathematics is, but logic, I maintain, is not part of philosophy. Philosophy proper deals with matters of interest to the general educated public, and loses much of its value if only a few professionals can understand what it said. In this book I have sought to deal, as comprehensively as I am able, with a very large question: How comes it that human beings, whose contacts with the world are brief and personal and limited, are nevertheless able to know as much as they do now? Is the belief in our knowledge partly illusory? And, if not, what must we know otherwise than through the senses?”

He said in the Introduction, “there has been a mistaken tendency among philosophers to allow the description of the world to be influenced unduly by considerations derived from the nature of human knowledge. To scientific common sense (which I accept) it is plain that only an infinitesimal part of the universe is known, that there were countless ages during which there was no knowledge, and that there will probably be countless ages without knowledge in the future.” (Pg. xi) He adds, “if, then, I am ever to be able to infer events, I must accept principles of inference which lie outside deductive logic. All inferences from events to events demands some kind of interconnection between different occurrences. Such interconnection … is implied… in whatever limited validity may be assigned to induction by simple enumeration. But the traditional ways of formulating the kind of interconnection that must be postulated are in many ways defective, some being too stringent and some not sufficiently so. To discover the minimum principles required to justify scientific inferences is one of the main purposes of this book.” (Pg. xii-xiii)

He states, “it must be admitted that there is a bare possibility---no more---that although occurrences in the brain do not infringe the laws of physics, nevertheless their outcome is not what it would be if no psychological factors were involved… There is therefore, so far, not the smallest positive reason for supposing that there is anything about physical processes in the brain that involves different macroscopic laws from those of the physics of inanimate matter. Nevertheless, for those who are anxious to assert the power of mind over matter it is possible to find a loophole… since… according to quantum physics, there are no physical laws to determine which of several possible transitions a given atom will undergo, we may imagine that, in a brain, the choice between possible transitions is determined by a psychological cause called ‘volition.’ All this is POSSIBLE, but no more than possible; there is not the faintest positive reason for supposing that anything of the sort actually takes place.” (Pt. One, Ch. V, pg. 40-41)

He observes, “‘Knowledge’ is a vague concept for two reasons. First, because the meaning of a word is always more or less vague… and second, because all that we count as knowledge is in a greater or lesser degree uncertain, and there is no way of deciding how much uncertainty makes a belief unworthy to be called ‘knowledge,’ any more than mow much loss of hair makes a man bald.” (Pt. Two, Ch. V, pg. 98) He points out, “There is a long history of discussions as to what was mistakenly called ‘skepticism of the senses.’ Many appearances are deceptive. Things seen in a mirror may be thought to be ‘real.’ … The rainbow seems to touch the ground at some point, but if you go there you do not find it… But in all these cases the core of data is not illusory, but only the derived beliefs. My visual sensations, when I look in a mirror or see double, are exactly what I think they are… In dreams I have all the experiences that I seem to have; it is only things outside my mind that are not as I believe them to be while I am dreaming. There are in fact no illusions of the senses, but only mistakes in interpreting sensational data as signs of things other than themselves… there is no evidence that there are illusions of the senses.” (Pt. Three, Ch. I, Pg. 167)

He contends, “the best scientific opinion of the present time has a better chance of truth, or of approximate truth, than any differing hypothesis suggested by a layman. The case is analogous to that of firing at a target. If you are a bad shot you are not likely to hit the bull’s-eye, but you are nevertheless more likely to hit the bull’s-eye than to hit any other equal area. So the scientist’s hypothesis, though not likely to be quite right, is more likely to be right than any variant suggested by an unscientific person.” (Pt. Four, Ch. I, pg. 235) He asserts, “Perfect rationality consists not in believing what is true but in attaching to every proposition a degree of belief corresponding to its degree of credibility. In regard to empirical propositions, the degree of credibility changes when fresh evidence accrues. In mathematics, the rational man who is not a mathematician will believe what he is told. He will therefore change his beliefs when mathematicians discover errors in the work of their predecessors. The mathematician himself may be completely rational in spite of making a mistake, if the mistake is one which at the time is very difficult to detect. Whether we ought to aim at rationality is an ethical question.” (Pt. Five, Ch. VI, pg. 397-398)

He argues, “Belief in causation, whether valid nor not, is deeply embedded in language. Consider how Hume, despite his desire to be skeptical, allows himself, from the start, to use the word ‘impression.’ An ‘impression’ should be something that presses in on one, which is a purely causal conception. The difference between an ‘impression’ and an ‘idea’ should be that the former, but not the latter, have a proximate cause which is external… For my part, I should define an ‘impression,’ or a ‘sensation,’ as a mental occurrence of which the proximate cause is physical, while an ‘idea’ has a proximate cause which is mental… In dreams we think we have impressions, but when we wake we usually conclude that we were mistaken. It follows that there is no INTRINSIC character which inevitably distinguishes impressions from ideas.” (Pt. Six, Ch. V, pg. 455-456)

Russell was reportedly disappointed that professional philosophers (who were engrossed in Existentialism and Linguistic Philosophy, when this book was published) ignored this book; but with the advantage of hindsight, I think we can appreciate it as an excellent summing-up of Russell’s analytic philosophy (except that he gives “science” a much greater degree of confidence than we might, nowadays).
