David Chandler (david.chandler@ucdenver.edu) is Assistant Professor of Management and Co-Director of the Managing for Sustainability Program at the University of Colorado Denver Business School. His research focuses on the dynamic interface between the organization and its institutional environment, which he operationalizes within the context of corporate social responsibility, business ethics, and firm/stakeholder relations. His research has been published in Organization Science, Academy of Management Review, Journal of Management, and Strategic Organization. Additional related publications include the book Corporate Social Responsibility: A Strategic Perspective (Business Expert Press, 2014). He received his Ph.D. in Management from The University of Texas at Austin.

About the Author
Mark Changizi is an evolutionary neurobiologist aiming to grasp the ultimate foundations underlying why we think, feel and see as we do. His research focuses on "why" questions, and he has made important discoveries such as on why we see in color, why we see illusions, why we have forward-facing eyes, why letters are shaped as they are, why the brain is organized as it is, why animals have as many limbs and fingers as they do, and why the dictionary is organized as it is.
He attended the Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology, and then went on to the University of Virginia for a degree in physics and mathematics, and to the University of Maryland for a PhD in math. In 2002, he won a prestigious Sloan-Swartz Fellowship in Theoretical Neurobiology at Caltech, and in 2007, he became an assistant professor in the Department of Cognitive Science at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. In 2010, he took the post of Director of Human Cognition at a new research institute called 2ai Labs.
He has more than 30 scientific journal articles, some of which have been covered in news venues such as "The New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Newsweek, " and "Wired." He has written three books, "The Brain From 25,000 Feet" (Kluwer 2003), "The Vision Revolution" (BenBella 2009), and "Harnessed"(BenBella 2011).

Very interesting but bound to be controversial

I always assumed that language developed using sound rather than sight because sight would not be effective at night and because in some environments (dense jungles and forests) it is easier to hear than it is to see. But what Changizi argues in this most interesting book is that the reason we use sound rather than say hand signals as language is that sounds, not sights, signal events.

He explains: "Audition excels at the `What's happening?' sensing a signal only when there's an event. Audition not only captures events we cannot see...but serves to alert us to events occurring even within our view. Nonevents may be screaming visually, but they are not actually making any noise, and so audition has unobstructed access to events--for the simple reason that sound waves are cast only when there is an event." (p. 34)

You can have sights without events. You can look out onto a landscape and see a myriad of things without anything moving, without a perceptible event taking place. But (to reiterate) you cannot have a sound without an event. Sounds signal events and that's what we are interested in. Something that changes. And that is why our eyes are tuned to movement, because it is movement in the visual world that signals change.

In Changizi's use of the word "harnessed" we can see the interplay between the organism and the environment. In one sense "harness" means "to restrain"; in another sense it means "to utilize." From one point of view the organism is restrained by the environment; in another sense it utilizes the environment. This is particularly true of humans.

Aside from this however I am not sure that this clever use of the word and the idea of "harness" really adds to our understanding of how "language and music mimicked nature," to quote from Chingizi's subtitle. In fact, to make "language" itself a kind of actor that "harnesses" or utilizes our auditory system is really just a metaphor since language itself does not act. The tail does not wag the dog. It is our auditory system that uses sound from nature to form language that is congenial to our evolutionary makeup including especially our brains.

What Changizi demonstrates beyond any shadow of a doubt--and he does it in a most edifying and nearly exhaustive way--is that speech and music imitate sounds found in nature. Changizi categorizes these sounds into "three fundamental building blocks: hits, slides, and rings." (p. 35) He calls these "nature's phonemes" and goes on to show how spoken language is made up of various combinations of these basic sounds.

A lesser idea, that civilization mimics nature (p. 10), is the sort of idea that from an evolutionary point of view has to be true. Where would we get our ideas? From God? From Plato's ideal types? If it is not obvious that culture and civilization spring from the natural world it is because some cultural tools, artifacts and practices are far removed from their primitive progenitors. I am thinking of the spaceship from the Stanley Kubrick film, A Space Odyssey, 2001, that comes very distantly from the bone used as a club by an ape.

Perhaps it would be better to speak of cultural evolution as utilizing or "harnessing" the environment in such a way as to make it convenient for human beings. Changizi instead speaks of "culture's general strategy for harnessing us." (p. 199) But we are not being harnessed; we are doing the harnessing (and in some respect, we are harnessing ourselves). Changizi realizes this when he goes on to say (still on page 199): "The trick is to structure modern human tasks as tasks at which our ape selves already excel."

I think the reason Changizi insists on having this metaphorically backwards is to demonstrate the dialectic nature of the evolutionary process (whether biological or cultural). To understand this, consider that in order for our feeling pain to be adaptive at least two things have to happen more or less in tandem. One, we have to feel the pain as something we very much want to avoid, and two, the pain must come as a result of some environmental event that is at least harmful to our continued existence. What is being "harnessed" here? The pain is being utilized (harnessed) by the organism as a means to alter behavior. One can speak (as Changizi might) that the pain is harnessing the organism to behave in a manner consistent with its survival, but this would be metaphorically speaking.

In the conclusion in the final chapter entitled "So What Are We?" he writes, "Language and music are evolved, organism-like artifacts that are symbiotic with...human apes. And like any symbiont, these artifact symbionts have evolved to possess shapes that fit the partner biology--our brains."

Okay, it's pretty clear what is at issue here: it is Changizi's idea that culture (in general) and language and music in particular are "organism-like" "symbionts." By definition and a long tradition in biology a symbiont is an organism, not an artifact of culture or even a meme. Changizi makes the very important point that we cannot understand humans or any organism without also understanding its environment and how it interacts with that environment. But I don't think it serves more than an illustrative purpose to call elements of culture symbionts; and I am willing to bet that the establishment in evolutionary biology is not going to be giving Changizi any high fives.

Still I think it is instructive to see language and culture in this manner as long as we realize that human beings in interaction with the environment create culture which in turn becomes part of our environment which in turn influences further cultural changes--all the while keeping in mind that culture is not alive in the same sense that biological organisms are.

For those readers expert in music and linguistics (which I am not) this book should prove to be an additional source of excitement and illumination because of Changizi's creativity and his obvious erudition and enthusiasm.

Intriguing but limited analyses lead to unconvincing and disappointing book

Unlike other reviewers so far, I found this book to be a major disappointment. The storyline generated does not hold up to scrutiny. It sounds good superficially and is at times thought-provoking but many limitations creep in throughout the text that call into question the basis of the research and its main conclusions.
The author tries to weave together an evolutionary story for why humans are a "musical species." This is a worthy task. However, most damningly to the whole premise of the book, there is little to no discussion about the real-world environmental and social context of humans' earliest days on Earth. Many of the examples used have no relevance to what sounds humans and our direct ancestors would have heard in the African and European "wild" environments; mostly he draws examples from more modern life to explain, post-hoc, why music evolved. It is very frustrating because it suggests that the author has little to no knowledge of human evolution--or worse, purposefully ignores it to make his case.
Also, there is a strange focus only on classical music throughout the book. It is not well justified and leads to the ignoring of all other types of music. Whether his ideas relate to other types of music is never discussed so it remains unclear whether the conclusions can be extrapolated to other genres. For someone professing to have an broad theory of why we listen to music, it would seem prudent to at least address why we listen, collectively, to so many different types of music.
The data sets used in the book from which to draw the conclusions seem to be all from the author's lab. Many of the data sets appear to have come from undergraduate projects; this is not a problem per se but it does raise questions about the quality of the data and arguments. It is unclear how many data sets are published (no footnotes or references are made to peer-review literature). This also begs questions about the approach used by the author--to focus only on work from his own lab conducted in many mini-projects by undergrads. This book definitely does not contain a wide-ranging review of the literature. Rather, the author sets up questions like bowling pins and tries to know them down simply and quickly (and, it seems he thinks, solidly) with small data sets from research led by him. The statement "Indeed this is what we find" is over used and seems to be used in a way to convince the reader that the data are more powerful that they really should be made out to be. It became annoying by the end of the book.
In sum, I would say that this book was written prematurely, and it is unclear whether the ideas are actually as definitive as that they are suggested to be by the author. Maybe the ideas have merit but the data are not yet available to support them which leaves the whole premise of the book on shaky ground. Unless the evolution and psychology of music are your main areas of study, I would suggest avoiding this book and looking to others that are more comprehensive and revealing such as "This is your brain on music" by Levitin.

the speed of culture

Harnessed, and The Vision Revolution -Mark Changizi previous book-, present altogether radically new explanations for how vision (color, pattern recognition, pattern processing) and hearing (language and music) have evolved to help humans interact with our environments (environments in which other humans are their most important constituents). Whereas in the first book the mechanisms are mainly explained by biological evolution (except for reading/writing), Harnessed is about cultural evolution. Our brains, not lacking innate traits (that would be the blank slate model), aren't either already designed to perform many of the most important tasks they do, such as reading (evolution hadn't had time) or, as Mark tries to demonstrate, using language.

Is it language already 'wired' in our brains, as Chomsky and Pinker defend, or has it evolved culturally: this is probably one of the most difficult and pending questions that will be addressed in this century. Changizi's approach: language evolved culturally, tapping in our brains capability to harness nature ("nature-harnessing: mimicking nature so as to harness evolutionarily ancient brain mechanisms for a new purpose") provides fresh air to the discussion and, without being conclusive, it clearly provides enough evidence and ideas in favor of cultural evolution. The relations between Nature and Mind have its own grammar, and our brains are constantly using it to develop new structures (physical, visual, musical, linguistic...) around, among and within us.

Artists, musicians and creators in general should read these books. Although Changizi is the first to suggest that one cannot simply reverse engineer some of the explained perceptual rules, that for instance explain why we enjoy music and why music is (statistically) structured the way it is, to automatically produce beauty, I believe these books offer hints to communicate with deep/lower level perception worth to explore.

An interesting corollary of both books is that our modern world, even if we perceive it (build it) as being a sort of opposite universe to Nature (the archetypical dichotomy of civilization versus the wild world, the raw and the cooked as Levi Strauss put it), is actually a recreation of Nature, but not in an 'aesthetic' or 'look&feel' way, but more in brain-functional way (something more related with our low perceptual level). Our urbanism, architecture, music, art and writing, have deep and complex connections with our perception systems, that evolved in non-civilized environments. We build those artifacts to mimic nature, at least the parts of nature that better interact with our brains. We built palaces of rich interaction for our minds.

A second interesting corollary (not mentioned by Mark) it's an exciting consequence of having such an open (yet structured) "machine" inside us: many other great capabilities might be there yet to be discovered, to be culturally evolved... new "languages" or "writings" if you wish (there's no way to describe this hypothetical new things, except in terms of old things..., the limit of our language are the limit of our world). "Things" so wide and powerful and complex and beautiful and constructive and structured, that it will be very hard to believe (again) that they are not wired in our brains and weren't designed throughout millions of years and by biological evolutionary means.

Put This Book at the Top of Your List

There are a lot of books on how to compose pleasing images. A lot. And I've read a lot of them. But if you want to cut to the chase and learn how to compose images that are brimming with visual energy, then I highly recommend reading "See It: Photographic Composition Using Visual Intensity" by Ellen and Josh Anon. The authors not only break down elements that add visual energy to photographs, but they also explain "why" each element adds to the energy or intensity. And when you understand the "why's" of visual intensity, then you can quickly get to the heart of the scene or subject when you're shooting.

The first part of the book offers in-depth information on visual and compositional elements including light, lines, shapes, textures, color, framing, and storytelling. Next, the authors evaluate a series of images in the Putting It All Together chapter. Then they walk readers through the process of creating images with visual intensity both in the field during shooting and during image editing. In addition, the book is generously and beautifully illustrated. By the time you finish the book, you'll have a good understanding of what it takes to make strong images with maximum visual impact.

If you're serious about moving your photography to the next level, then this book should be at the top of your list.

A New Approach

All of technique, e.g., shutter speed, focusing, and aperture, has only one purpose: the composition. The composition is ultimately how the photographer conveys his vision to the viewer. In this book Josh and Ellen Anon suggest a new approach to composition, visual intensity. Roughly speaking, visual intensity refers to the amount of energy in a photograph, but even that definition is only a very rough description.

After defining visual intensity, the book reviews the usual compositional elements like perception; lines, shapes and textures; color; framing; light; and visual story telling, pointing out how each contributes to visual intensity. At the same time the authors review traditional rules of composition, like the rule of thirds and horizon placement. The authors then show a portfolio of works by different renowned photographers, explaining how the concept of visual intensity contributes to each image. The next chapter shows how the previously explored concepts apply to capturing images in the field. The authors demonstrate how the rules of visual intensity apply to digital processing, and then mention a few other creative techniques like high dynamic range photography.

This is my first contact with the concept of visual intensity and I found it quite useful as an approach to composition different from traditional rules. Most photographers, regardless of skill level, will benefit from studying this approach, although it would be useful to have some experience as a photographer to best apply the approach. For example, in post processing, the explanation of how to use Lightroom, Aperture, Photoshop and plug-ins like NIK Color Effects Pro to control visual intensity will only be understood by those familiar with post-processing software, even though the authors writing style is quite clear. Similarly, one should have a good understanding of exposure and focus.

I did have one objection. Sidebars are printed on a light-blue background, with grey sans-serif print that is extremely difficult to read. I think it's time for the publisher to evaluate its use of fonts in its instructional manuals. Nevertheless, the book is good enough and important enough that this one fault shouldn't stop photographers from reading it.

I consider this one of the most important books on photography techniques printed this year, and recommend it highly.

Must Read

This is an incredibly detailed well written book on the important aspect of photography. I would add this to the great classic on composition, Richard Zakia's Perception and Photography, which I use to recommend to my photography students.
Ellen has a unique background that makes her well prepared to write this book. She is a psychologist who took up photography latter in life. Her psychological training and background enabled her to study, examine, and explain what elements make up a compelling strong photographic image.
After learning the techniques and science of photography this should be the book that will take your images to the next level from technically proficient to having great impact and composition.
Having taught photography for over 20 yrs, I would have to say this book is a must read for people wanting to improve there images.

A fairly good text book

This book does give a good idea of the subject. However, I found that it is rather basic, and is suitable more as a text book, and not for the purpose that I was looking. As a person experienced in business and manufacturing, and having recently entered the retail segment, I was looking for a book that would give me more in-depth information on the subject.

Every baker NEEDS this book.

I started a bakery/deli in 1993 using a professional baker and this book as my foundation. In time I also learned to use advice from my customers and from other pros. Still, the whole lot of the experts, save one, gave less useful information than did this classic by Joseph Amendola.
Theories of dough fermentation and the like are of especial importance for any new baker. When something goes wrong, too, this book has a good trouble-shooting section.
I heartily recommend this book to any baker, commercial or men and women trying to please their loved ones.
Other books you should add to the shelf are Professional Baking and Quantity Cooking.

Tim Haines trained as a zoologist before becoming a scientific journalist. He has worked on the BBC program, Nature, as well as its award-winning Ice Mummy trilogy. He is executive producer of the Walking With Dinosaurs series.

Introduction

Almost ten years ago we started making a television series called Walking with Dinosaurs. At the time it was very expensive and high risk because it aimed to use Hollywood technology to educate and inform rather than simply entertain. We offered the audience a vision of dinosaurs as real animals, not vindictive monsters. Fortunately the series broadcast to record audiences, and has since been seen by almost 400 million people worldwide.

However, we knew at the time that we were telling only half the story. Many weird and wonderful creatures came before and after the dinosaurs. The extraordinary success of Walking with Dinosaurs allowed us to complete this story. Walking with Beasts detailed the evolution of the mammals after the dinosaurs died out, and Walking with Monsters revealed the wonderful variety of creatures that thrived before the dinosaurs evolved. We finished with seven and a half hours of television that covered 4 billion years, cost millions of pounds and told the biggest story of them all -- the evolution of life on Earth.

The combined coverage of these television series has allowed us to fulfil another long-standing ambition -- namely, to produce a book that could tell the same story using the unique high-resolution stills made possible by the materials produced specially for the programs. Across the following pages you will see careful re-creations of dozens of prehistoric animals, each sculpted by specialist modelers, scanned into a computer and then brought to life by talented animators.

Part of making these extinct animals look true to life was ensuring that we accurately portrayed the latest scientific thinking about their biology, behavior and lifestyle. At every stage over the last ten years we have depended on scientists to guide us about the look and feel of the animals we were re-creating. Much of this information is available in books and journals, but our desire for the latest and most up-to-date information often led us to talk to those scientists who routinely work with the fossils of specific animals. Over the years we have contacted more than 600 scientists, all experts in their field, and all of them major contributors to the sum total of our knowledge about the prehistoric world. Much of the information that appears in this book is thanks to them, and has never before been aired in public.

In addition to the computer-generated animals, the landscapes on to which they have been superimposed were also specifically chosen because their climate, plants and topography are a close match to the prehistoric environments in which our various animals lived. The background photographs in this book were taken in a wide range of exotic locations, from the jungles of Indonesia to the deserts of Utah and the coral reefs of the Red Sea and the Caribbean.

We believe that this book presents as accurate a vision of the world's prehistoric past as our technology presently allows, but the fossil record is far from complete, and new discoveries are constantly overturning established scientific 'truths': palaeontological thought does not stand still for long. All we can do is continue to refine our opinions and remain open to new evidence.

Great text and great pictures

This book accompanies the Walking with Dinosaurs shows that appeared on BBC. I am not sure which came first, the shows or the books. But regardless, this book is great. Starting from the Cambrian explosion and ending with early humans, this book highlights numerous animal life forms over the past 600 million years; with an even balance of fish, reptiles, birds, mammals, arthropods, molluscs, and amphibians. Now echinoderms, coelenterates, medusa, or other "lower" life forms unfortunately. The book is broken up into several large chapters; each chapter covers a geological time period. Each chapter then focuses on several dozen key animals; each animal gets 1 - 2 pages of text + figures to describe it. All the figures are color; and the text is written with enough detail for the professional dinosaur buff, but easy enough for children to understand. The figures are wonderful, and look like digital photographs of real animals. The organization is great; and the book binding is also great. Overall, a great book.

This is the only Dino Book you'll need!

If I could choose just one Dino book, this is the one! My grandkids actually read one to pieces and this is my second! The dinosaurs are organized alphabetically and by time period, then the pictures and pictures on each are spectacular, thorough and impressive. Kids and adults of all ages can enjoy (and become experts quickly) reading through this book! I highly recommend this to anyone who is interested in dinosaurs. It has the potential to be a reference book.

THIS IS A GREAT BOOK!

My only complaint about the book is its title: "The COMPLETE Guide to Prehistoric Life". It is by no means a complete or encyclopedic guide.....however it is very informative, entertaining and the pictures/illustrations are superbly done.

For its size, the book does an admirable job of covering some of the most interesting animals from prehistory and not just the dinosaurs.
This book was published by the same people who aired the series "Walking with Dinosaurs" "Walking with Beasts" several years ago and makes a great followup to the DVDs.

The level of the text is straightforward (not too high and scientific.... yet certainly not a "Barney Book" book either) and appeals in my opinion to people of any age who just want to look and see and find out about what was around back then.
I've read some of the other reviews here, and I agree there is some sensationalizing, and certainly liberties are taken in guesswork about these animals- but then again, it makes the book more fun to read and we all know nobody knows the facts for sure. Some animals for example we only have a single jawbone or half a skeleton to go on so there is plenty of room for imagination and guesswork. The authors tend to focus mostly on the largest and most bizarre animals but then again, that's usually what draws the crowds.
I collect dinosaur books and find this one is one of the most looked at, unlike many books of this nature it goes a bit farther than just a picture of an animal and a short paragraph- often has several different poses, and more background information, longer schpiels.

I got this book for $8 off Amazon, although when it arrived it wasn't exactly 'new' as advertised, it had a library sticker on it(???). Nevertheless, an exceptional buy and well worth the price. A must have for the dinosaur fan!

3/09/10 I just wanted to add one more thing after looking through this book- the size of the dinosaurs are continually exaggerated. Most of them are at least five feet bigger than their counterparts in other dino books, and in some cases (such as Scutosaurus and Liopleurodon), they are TWICE the size they are in other books.
Argentinosaurus, the largest land animal that ever lived, ridiculously oversized (the human figure looks almost like a dust speck in comparison). Oh well.

About the Author
Alfredo Hoyos, MD, is a board-certified Plastic Surgeon from Bogot�, Colombia. He undertook his medical training at Rosario University and subsequently specialized in plastic surgery. Dr. Hoyos is the inventor of high-definition liposculpture (HDL) and other advanced body contouring techniques. Making use of cutting-edge VASER technology, he designed VASER Hi-Definition Lipoplasty (VHD), which produces a high muscle definition in both men and women. Dr. Hoyos and his associates have performed more than 1500 procedures with reliable, consistent, and safe results. Dr. Hoyos continues to refine these techniques as well as to develop and create new applications of HDL to additional anatomical regions. Furthermore, he has extensive experience as a lecturer and trainer for both VASER and Smartlipo. Dr Hoyos is also a medical illustrator, painter, and sculptor. Peter Michael Prendergast, BMedSc, MB, BCh, BAO (Hons), MRCSI, graduated from the National University of Ireland in Cork and De La Salle College in Waterford. After a final medical clerkship at Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital, he completed his surgical training at the Adelaide and Meath Hospital, Dublin. Since 2005 he has been in private practice in aesthetic medicine as the Medical Director of Venus Medical. He is an official trainer for VASER-assisted lipoplasty. Dr. Prendergast is Founder and President of the European College of Aesthetic Medicine and a Founder Member of the Irish Association of Cosmetic Doctors. He has delivered courses and lectures across the world on a range of topics in aesthetic medicine and is the author of many book chapters and journal articles. In 2011, Dr. Prendergast co-edited the book Aesthetic Medicine: Art and Techniques with Melvin A. Shiffman.
