Disappointing

I was disappointed by this publication. You don't get the accompaniment part in the piano- you get the bass line in the left hand and the vocal part with some extra chord voicing in the right hand. This especially bothers me because I have the Little Voice book (I would say 95% accurate arrangements) and Kaleidoscope Heart (probably 85% accurate arrangements) but The Blessed Unrest has almost no real piano parts. It bothers me that they used to do it right and now the publisher seems to be trying to make it easier music to sell better... but that doesn't look like it's working. Why easier? That hypothesis comes from the publisher changing the key from the original recorded key to one with less accidentals in the key signature. For example, Chasing the Sun was originally in C#, (7 sharps) (Or, enharmonically, D flat, 5 flats, if you wish) and they have moved it down a half step to C, a key with no accidentals. Cassiopeia- now in G, but originally recorded half a step lower, making it G flat, 6 flats (Or F# 6 #s). Sure, maybe this is easier to read. However. Sara Bareilles plays piano, right? She writes in those keys because Db is actually a very comfortable fit for your hand on the piano. In Little Voice, Between the Lines is written in F#- yes, I had a hard time learning it, but you know what? It made my reading better and now sight reading in F# is not really a problem. It also fits well under your hand. So if you play piano, this book might make you annoyed. If you play guitar, the music/ chords all seems to be right, so go ahead.

Not authentic.

Very disappointed in this publication. This isn’t what Sara Bareilles really plays. In this book, the voice part is worked into the piano arrangement as opposed to existing on its own and being sung against Sara’s interesting piano arrangements. One of my favorite parts of playing her music is how the piano part contrasts with the melody, yet fits together so well. King of Anything is a great example – what makes the song so cool is that the piano part is so different from the vocals. Many songs on her new album would be similar, however the arrangements in this songbook ruin all of that by dumbing everything down and condensing it all into the piano part. I have the other songbooks – Kaleidoscope Heart, Once Upon Another Time, and Little Voice – all by Cherry Lane Publishing with the “artist approved” stamp on the cover (which is not on this book) and LOVE them. So sad this book is different. Also, many of the songs are in a different key than they are recorded. What’s the point? If someone is buying her sheet music, they’re probably a skilled enough pianist to play the music, even if it’s in a key like D flat. *I did some research and was able to find 7 of the songs with authentic arrangements by Cherry Lane Publishing on Musicnotes.com. Only problem is each song costs 5.25. I’m seriously considering returning this book, waiting it out to see if a better book comes out, or just biting the bullet and buying each song online separately.

Disappointing

I am a professional musician and a big fan of Sara's music. I have purchased the piano/vocal/guitar books for all of her previous albums, but this one is a disappointment. I did not notice until the book arrived that it is NOT an "artist approved" publication. This means that all of the notation was put together by someone who listened to the album and wrote out their own version of what they heard. In several songs the accompaniment doesn't even come close to the parts played and recorded by Sara. Yes - the chords are accurate and the vocal lines are mostly correct -- but if you're looking for the AUTHENTIC parts, do NOT buy this book. I've seen sheet music on sheetmusic.com that is more accurate.

This volume covers the first period, focusing on the political history of the UNITA movement and its struggles with the MPLA.

The Angolan civil war was the product of personal jealousies, contrasting ideologies, and ethnic animosities. From its inception, the conflict between UNITA and Angola’s Marxist government was an international affair involving the U. S., the USSR, China, and many African states: W. Martin James III, who wrote his book near the close of the first period of civil war, contends that despite Gorbachev’s "new thinking" and talk of peaceful solutions to regional conflicts, Soviet policy toward Angola marked a reversion to the Brezhnev Doctrine. The biggest MPLA-Cuban offenses occurred during Gorbachev’s tenure with Soviet advisers at the brigade level directing an MPLA offensive.

American policy toward Angola is also examined here. This is the first book to emphasize the dynamic role of UNITA in the Angolan liberation movement. James acknowledges that the importance of foreign powers in guaranteeing a government of national reconciliation. Just as important are strategies of compromise requiring trust in a political context where it is violated and submission for the common good where defiance is a remnant of the colonial past. Foreign policy analysts, African area specialists, and scholars of post-colonial history find this volume indispensible.

OpenSIPS is a multifunctional, multipurpose signalling SIP server. About the Author

Flavio E. Goncalves

Flavio E. Goncalves was born in 1966 in Brazil. Having a strong interest in computers, he got his first personal computer in 1983, and since then, it has been almost an addiction. He received his degree in engineering in 1989 with a focus on computer-aided designing and manufacturing. He is also the CTO of SipPulse Routing and Billing Solutions in Brazil―a company dedicated to the implementing of small-to-medium telephone companies, VoIP providers, and large-scale new generation telephony systems. Since 1993, he has participated in a series of certification programs and been certificated as Novell MCNE/MCNI, Microsoft MCSE/MCT, Cisco CCSP/CCNP/CCDP, Asterisk dCAP, and some others. He started writing about open source software because he thinks that the way certification programs have worked is very good for learners. Some books are written by strictly technical people who sometimes do not have a clear idea on how people learn. He tried to use his 15 years of experience as an instructor to help people learn about the open source telephony software. Together with Bogdan, he created the OpenSIPS boot camp followed by the e-learning program, OpenSIPS eBootcamp. His experience with networks, protocol analyzers, and IP telephony combined with his teaching experience gave him an edge to write this book. This is the fourth book written by him. Bogdan-Andrei Iancu

Bogdan-Andrei Iancu entered the SIP world in 2001, right after graduating in computer science from the Politehnica University of Bucharest, Romania. He started as a researcher at the FOKUS Fraunhofer Institute, Berlin, Germany. For almost four years, Bogdan accumulated a quick understanding and experience of VoIP/SIP, being involved in research and industry projects and following the evolution of the VoIP world closely. In 2005, he started his own company, Voice System. The company entered the open source software market by launching the OpenSER/OpenSIPS project―a free GPL-SIP proxy implementation. As the CEO of Voice System, Bogdan pushes the company in two directions: developing and supporting. The OpenSIPS public project (Voice System being the major contributor and sponsor of the project) creates professional solutions and platforms (OpenSIPS-based) for the industry. In other words, Bogdan's interest was to create knowledge (through the work with the project) and to provide the knowledge where needed (embedded in commercial products or raw format as consultancy services). In the effort of sharing the knowledge of the SIP/OpenSIPS project, he started to run the OpenSIPS Bootcamp in 2008 together with Flavio E. Goncalves, which is intensive training dedicated to people who want to learn and get hands-on experience on OpenSIPS from experienced people. Bogdan's main concern is to research and develop new technologies or software for SIP-based VoIP (this is the reason for his strong involvement with the OpenSIPS project) and pack all these cutting-edge technologies as professional solutions for the industry.

Fast track to your own VoIP server with OpenSIPS

This book serves as a good foundation for designing and implementing your own VoIP system. The author begins with the basics of the SIP protocol and its various components. The star of the show, OpenSIPS, is detailed in the next chapter. As the author explains, over the years OpenSIPS has evolved into the heart of a full-fledged SIP processing and handling solution. With its high traffic throughput, extensibility with modules and a powerful scripting language, OpenSIPS has you covered. The author thoroughly explains the installation of OpenSIPS on Linux. The author takes readers through a practical overview of the scripting required to direct the routing of SIP messages. Authentication is a critical function performed by OpenSIPS. This data needs to be persistent so naturally a database is required at the backend. The author uses MySQL for this purpose but the example scripts can easily be adapted to any other supported database. OpenSIPS comes with a GUI that makes adding/deleting users trivial, along with a lot of other useful functionality. This aspect is covered in a chapter of its own. The latter half of the book touches upon such important topics as interfacing with PSTN gateways, using the dialog module of OpenSIPS and overcoming the problem presented by network address translation. Configuring the Asterisk media server, using built-in and external monitoring tools for troubleshooting and securing OpenSIPS to thwart cyber attacks are covered in detail before the author wraps up with some advanced topics specific to OpenSIPS 2.1. All in all, this book doesn’t disappoint with chock-full of useful information spanning over almost 400 pages.

I was helping with this book as a reviewer and I had a chance to read it through.

Several years ago, when I just started to learn SIP and SIP proxies, I have read the first edition of the book of the same author. It helped me a lot on my way of learning and implementing scalable and robust VoIP systems with OpenSIPS.

Since that time OpenSIPS has evolved and added a lot of new and very important features.

This book will be very helpful for those who wants to start with OpenSIPS and SIP protocol as well as for those who already has an experience with previous versions of OpenSIPS and want to learn new interesting feature of OpenSIPS version 2.

If you are new to SIP protocol this book is a great resource. Reading RFCs and specifications (there are a lot of RFCs) might be bouring while following this book helps to upderstand SIP protocol trying to implement SIP server with OpenSIPS. That does not mean that this book will make you an expert of SIP protocol but if you are looking where to start, this book is the right place.

Those who already familiar with OpenSIPS will find andvanced technics on how to implement SIP services, SIP NAT traversing and SIP security. You should definitly check chapter 14 that explains new OpenSIPS asynchrones mode that is a very interesting and powerful key feature of OpenSIPS v2. There are a lot of code examples and practical advices that can be very useful while implementing your own SIP infastructure with OpenSIPS.

As one of the reviewers of this book I had a chance to read it before it was published. With more than 20 years experience in telephony and having worked with many Proxy Server and SBCs, I definitely recommend this book. This book can be a great learning experience for both beginners and experts. It covers a wide range of VoIP and SIP signalling concepts and practices and it would be a must read for anyone interested in setting up some sort of Voice over IP and Telephony platform.
Over the years I found that people often struggle with network setup and NAT with SIP. This book can help you greatly with both. It also discusses various aspects of VoIP in a real world deployment that it is often overlooked.
I have known the authors of this book for many years and they both have a great knowledge, experience and understanding of real life challenges and requirements of a VoIP Platform.
If you are not sure what is a proxy server or if that you need one, please read this book, because once you understand and start using a proxy server such as OpenSIPS, you will forever wonder how you ever did without it. OpenSIPS is one of the best choices as a Proxy Server or a SBC with a great development team behind it.

The dogmatic title of this book is enough to raise the hackles of any music lover. That's unfortunate, because this is a well-designed primer on music for the intelligent but uninformed listener of any age. At 63, Goulding, a Washington newspaper journalist who moved to high government and business posts in defense and oil, attempted to learn something about classical music. Amazingly, he found no helpful sources for the adult absolute beginner. Ten years later, he presents this book for those in the same quandary. The user-friendly format features charts, pictures, and sidebars, simple explanations of musical terms, and descriptions of instruments. The writing flows easily, and the text is readable and browsable. There is nothing new here, but Goulding has done his homework carefully and thoroughly. Recommended for the curious but illiterate music lover.

Fantastic Intro to Classical Music

A book for newcomers to Classical music, it acquaints you with the subject in several valuable ways. First, the different periods (Renaissance, Baroque, Classical, Romantic, 20th Century) are defined and broken down. Then, significant artists of every period are defined. Then, the top 50 composers are listed, in order, beginning with Mr. Bach. Each of the 50 artists are then given a biographical sketch, an overview of their life's work, and their most significant works are highlighted. A Collecters Starter Kit follows for each of the 50, containing 5 works that provide good representation of their careers. Obviously, 5 works may seem laughable when considering Mozart, and may seem too much when considering Bizet, so expanded lists of works follow for those composers with a large body of work.
Goulding treats this book as a research effort, but his personal views do come through at times (He makes it very clear that Georg Telemann and Antonio Vivaldi would NOT be among his top 50, but remain on list because they are historically important composers. In fact, in the description of Telemann you are greatly encouraged to substitute Sergei Rachmaninoff).
The book ends with suggested recordings of each Starter Kit selection. This is very valuable reading prior to taking your next trip to the record store. Whether or not you choose to buy the recommended recordings, this section of the book gives you a good idea of who are the Great conductors and Orchestras, and picking a CD is easier when names like Solti, Karajan, Rubenstein, and Ashkenazy are names familiar to you.

Gets you started--then you can make up your own mind!

This book makes an excellent addition to the library of any budding classical music aficionado. It is informative and presented in a clear format that gives the reader a foundation for musical exploration as well as logical direction.
Much of the early chapters ("The Organization of Sound," "Setting the Stage") is written for the rank beginner. I found myself skimming these chapters, as will most readers who already know the differences between melody and harmony, strings and woodwinds, baroque and romantic. A beginner will find it helpful while not dry, and it's well-organized for later reference.
The bulk of the book is then given to a discussion of "The 50 Greatest Composers and Their 1,000 Greatest Works." Goulding gives a nutshell biography, with some colorful sidebars, that gives a good overview of the composers' lives, times, influences, strengths, and weaknesses.
After the bio is the most valuable part of the book--the greatest works of that composer. Goulding presents a "Starter Kit," a "Top Ten," and a "Master Collection" for each of the 50 composers. This allows a classical music newcomer to get the breadth of composers and the depth of a composer that appeals to them. That's what makes this book one that will be a long-time reference work rather than a one-off "beginners only" guide.
Most "composer's guides" seem to favor an egalitarian, arbitrary ordering--alphabetical, chronological--rather than passing judgment about the composer's worth. (I guess it's fortunate for the music beginner that one encounters Bach and Beethoven early on in either an alphabetical or chronological ordering!) I find that Goulding's rankings give direction to exploring classical music. By the time the reader is through the top 10 or top 20 in the list they've gotten to know the majority of the most important composers and their most important works.
It's easy to quibble with individual rankings--for example, I would place Sibelius (ah, his wonderful Third Symphony!) higher than #28, and there's no way you could convince me that Wagner is a better composer than Haydn or Schubert--but hard to say with a straight face that a beginner should learn Hindemith before Strauss, or Verdi before Bach.
Ultimately, there's no ranking that matters, other than one's own. Even that's a difficult proposition. Do I like Bach or Beethoven better? Darned if I know--they both "do it" for me, and (to quote Forrest Gump) that's all I've got to say about that.
My fault with the book is that Goulding's Chapter I amounts to an unnecessary justification of his ranking system, rather than diving into musical "required knowledge" and then discussing composers after laying the groundwork. Just note all the reviews more concerned with presentation (i.e., the ranking system) rather than content!
He also wastes some ink on some contrived statistics based on his rankings--ranks by nationality, century of birth, etc.--that don't do much of anything that someone who cared about that sort of thing couldn't do for themselves in an Excel spreadsheet in a half hour.
Buy this guidebook for its clear direction on where to start listening and how to broaden and deepen one's knowledge, take Goulding's opinions with a grain of salt, and acquire enough experience to form your own opinions.

I knew next to nothing about classical music, but wanted to add some to my music collection. Browsing through the classical section in stores got overwhelming in a hurry. This book helped me a great deal to narrow down what CDs to look for. It's easy to read and understand, includes bios of the 50 most popular/important composers and which of their works are the most well-known, popular, or historically important. Also some suggestions on CDs to buy for various works. You don't need to read the chapters on musical history or instruments, but they are interesting and informative.
This same author has a similar book on opera, too. I'm not as interested in building a collection of opera, but I plan on buying the book just to read and educate myself a little more on opera.
Highly recommended as an easy introduction to classical music, or if you're looking to build or expand your classical libary.
