Alyssa Morris: Now that you’ve had a bit of time to absorb the success of Bared to You, does it feel real? Or are you still surprised?

Sylvia Day: I'm still surprised! I’m glad I’m a veteran and that I’ve been publishing for close to 10 years, so I had some experience under my belt as far as dealing with it. But on the other hand, there’s no way to anticipate writing something that becomes a global phenomenon, you know. I don’t know about other writers--I didn’t even dream about anything like that. I always figured that it just happened to the Stephenie Meyers and J.K. Rowlings of the world. So, yeah, I don’t think I’ll ever get over being surprised that I had a series that struck such a chord.

AM: It just hit such a moment in our culture, where all of a sudden this is what everyone wants to be reading. It’s an interesting confluence.

SD: Right. We always talk about that, about right book, right time. Random House released Fifty Shades on the same day I self-published Bared to You, so talk about the right timing. Just… wow!

AM: Do you have a favorite moment in the Crossfire series so far?

SD: You know, I really loved the weekend that Gideon and Eva spent in the Outer Banks. These poor guys. When they’re alone, they’re fine. Life is perfect when they’re alone. Unfortunately, they don’t get a lot of time alone. [Laughs] So I just love that. I love seeing them together away from all of the distractions and intrusions and everything else that’s going wrong in their lives.

I can’t talk too much about Entwined with You because it’s not out yet. And that’s so hard, because I so want to talk tabout it! But there’s more alone time with Gideon and Eva as we move forward in the series and they grow stronger, so I’m really enjoying that as a writer.

For shame Sylvia Day

For shame Sylvia Day. As if paying $30 for one character's story isn't bad enough-- it isn't even finished! Never mind it was originally billed as a trilogy. Never mind that you have pushed the release date back... Unprofessional.

I love Eva. I think she deserves a great story that, in the end, is tied up in the perfect bow. This book had absolutely no plot to it. It could have been a novella if the editors took out every time Gideon and Eva said ' I love you ' to one another. The drawn out emotional conversations that led nowhere were trying and tiring. In addition, there is no further character development than the last book.. Eva is still hopelessly dependent on this relationship; Gideon is still trying to prove himself to her; Eva's mom is still controlling; Cary is still trying to have his cake and eat it too; Brett is still thinking he has a shot with her; Corinne is still on my nerves etc.

I'm a little glad this book is getting bad reviews, because I'm so disappointed that I can't in good conscience purchase another of Sylvia Day's books. As a consumer I feel used and taken advantage of-- and I hate that I looked forward to this book so much...

Very Disappointed

I was so looking forward to this book coming out, I pre-ordered. Boy was I disappointed. I keep looking at how far into the book I was and thinking there are a lot of loose ends to wrap up before it ends .... and why is she introducing all this stuff now? I was very disappointed in the fluff and thin story line. When I found out she is stretching this out to not 4 BUT 5 books, I decided I'm DONE. I, like so many other readers, thought Trilogy meant three. I don't like being sold a false bill of goods.

Probably should be a Kindle only book - Looks like the book is just a long blog post converted to a book.

I usually don't have to write about the quality of the book itself vs the contents, but it's important to realize that the book's first page started off talking about a children's coloring book, and then starts on the random page number and continues on without any real structure / contents. There may be chunks of the book missing from the print edition, or this just might be the way the book is. After I read the book in 30 minutes, I suspected the high reviews - several other reviewers here have dead profiles and have only ever rated this book. The physical book also has hyperlinks in it (eg. "Check out *this* site to read more.") which is a bit annoying. It seems like the book was originally Kindle only and then as an afterthought was self published in a very hurried manner.

The book's contents are good though, but not detailed enough that you can actually accomplish many of the suggestions he's laid out in the book. A true beginner will get lost on the AdWords site and unfortunately there's not a single (grainy) picture of the AdWords site to help guide anyone around.

I'm torn though, the information is good, which is worth something for sure, but it's no more detailed, explained better, or more organized than any blog would be on the subject.

Great for beginners to understand Google Adowrds and create ad campaigns.easy to read and more importantly easy to implement. Its all very clever and easy to implement. I am impressed by being able to get this as an ebook or simillar so it can be viewed particularly as a reminder every so often.
This book by Corey has helped me understand the basics of Google AdWords. Now my campaigns are working better and the overall return on investment has been much better. In a nutshell, if you are a business owner like me and would like to take control of your paid online promotion using Google AdWords...then this book is a must for you.

But, I found the adwords editor quite cumbersome,
but I then found PPC Keyword Toolz which is a software tool to create adwords (and bing) campaigns.
PPC Keyword Toolz lets you create campaigns with 1000s or Adgroups and Ads very quickly and easily.

Discussing the many moors and values that often come with Christianity and sex, Anne Krabill Hershberger discusses much from pornography, same-sex relationships and compassion, sex before marriage, among other topics. A worthy read for Christian unsure of their own sexual values, "Sexuality: God's Gift" is a fine read, recommended.

Instill a love for God's Word!

Beautifully illustrated to keep young people interested in the stories and instill a love for the Word of God. As an adult, I enjoy the basic stories and illustrations, too! I teach first grade at a private school and placed one on the classroom bookcase. The students daily argued for a turn with this bible, so I ordered one for each student to keep at their own desk! The illustrations encourage/help beginning readers. The vocabulary is appropriate for the target age. My college and high school aged daughters had this Bible and have fond memories of it. Both love God's Word still. I highly recommend it.

Accurate and holds children's attention

We've owned 3 copies of this book because we keep wearing ours out from so much use. This is really the only modern Bible storybook we have found that had text that was worth anything. Most story Bibles do a plain bad job re-telling the stories. Errors abound!
My children have all enjoyed the pictures in this Bible storybook - they are more like caricatures and they captivate!
Another good option would be something by Kenneth Taylor. (The Bible in Pictures for Little Eyes Kenneth N. Taylor)

Great illustrations

I was looking for a children's Bible with colorful illustrations and this one is great. It is the NIV version and covers most of the readings you would expect from a children's Bible. The cover is hardback, the paper pages are slightly shiny with vivid colors and durable. It warped the pages a little bit when water spilt on them, but the pages did not stick together or bleed; in fact it looks almost new even though well-read. The words are more elementary in language and helpful for my older one learning to read and better understand the lessons. The illustrations are very animated, so the emotions in the story are conveyed much more than in our other kid Bible, which shows everyone smiling all the time. It's hard to express the sacrifices witnessed when the characters don't even look upset. We are pleased with this Bible and it should last until they are ready for a more mature version.

Both Barbara Ryden and Brad Peterson are respected teachers and researchers at Ohio State University. Peterson serves as Department Chair. Excellent Undergrad Astrophysics textbook

I read through much of this book and was very pleased.
I would target it at Physics students who have had at least 2 years of physics and calculus.
The book often used for these students is one by Zeilik
which I have found full of typos(typos in derivations, in math, and even in the constants in the back of the book!) and doesn't flow smoothly and sometimes omits essential explanations.

Foundations of Astrophysics by Ryden and Peterson does a more complete explanation of atomic processes and of Solar System formation and flows smoother. It covers nearly all the topics in Zeilik as well as expands upon some material.

So far I have not found any typos and the examples and derivations are well explained and interesting.
As yet I have not seen a solutions manual published, the authors might want to consider publishing one, they are always useful!

Thank you to the authors for writing what I hope will become a heavily used text for undergrad astrophysics!

Foundations of Astrophysics

I was initially put off by the first few chapters of this book and that may be why the book gets average to below average reviews from other reviewers. The book covers the same material as my lower level astronomy survey course books with a few more equations thrown in at first so it is hard to justify the extra cost of the book for the student _if_ this were the only part of the book covered in the course. However, once the initial coordinate systems, celestial mechanics and planetary science material is past the book begins to do a good job on stellar structure and I especially found the discussions of galaxies and cosmology useful and at the right mathematical level for undergrads with a calculus background. The discussion is more up to date than Ostlie and Carroll and my old copy of Zeilik on the later topics as well. Good to very good book in the later sections but slow to take off. Since I have not taught from the book, I have not worked enough problem to know how well chosen they are. I would give the book a mixed review (3.5-4.0 stars) but higher than some of those listed here since I find I pull it off the shelf more and more when I want to get a well organized and pertinent review of material on stars and galaxies and don't want to plow through a grad text to find the information. A bit expensive for what you get which may add to the disgruntled opinions here. A less expensive edition is needed. Mine is a review copy.

Worst textbook I have ever used in my 4 years as a physics undergrad.

This is absolutely the worst book I have ever used in my entire undergraduate career as a physics major. Absolutely no question about it.

Explanations of concepts are adequate enough, and the diagrams are decent, but the rest of the content is absolutely horrendous. Equations are not clearly explained, and it is never clear whether they're deriving an equation or showing what the resulting equation is. This leads to a complete and utter failure to lead the reader to any kind of understanding of the formulas, which makes it damn near impossible to do the homework problems. Ah... speaking of the homework problems...

The homework problems are absolutely f*cking useless in this book. No examples are given in the text, so it is unbelievably hard to know what to even do for the problems. It is not even remotely clear what should be a given value or a constant in the homework problems. They don't even tell you, so it's up to you to know what information should be given and what values you need to solve for. Additionally, these given values are buried within the text, so you have to hunt for them which takes forever if the values are in the book at all. Some problems have had given values that aren't even in the book that you would have to google for. That is unacceptable.

I use Chegg, where solutions are available for this book, in addition to the solutions that our professor gives us for the homework. Between these two sources (with solutions that sometimes vary slightly), it is STILL unbelievably difficult to understand where the answers are coming from. Many of the solutions have steps that say something akin to "the value of x is given by (some formula)". Many of these equivalencies are NOWHERE TO BE FOUND in the book. The only way you would know them is if you did intense unit analysis for a wide array of the formulas in the book to figure out what combination of formulas would give you the units you are looking for. That is insane.

The organization, presentation, and thoroughness of information in this book is a total shitshow.

I am a physics major in my senior year, and am an amateur astronomer and astrophotographer. This is the class that I was most looking forward to this semester and this book has totally killed any interest or preliminary love I may have once had for the subject. I will probably burn this book and send an email to the author as nasty as this review at the end of the semester out of sheer spite.

Solid...fantasy? Sci fi? Dystopia? Little bit of each?

This series is a builder. The world, characters, and plot are built slowly but steadily over the course of the trilogy. The plot doesn't cut out on a cliffhanger, but you will not have many answers by the end of the first book, and you won't quite have all of them by the end of the second. If this sounds like something that would drive you nuts, skip this series. Personally, I loved it.

It's not a matter of leaving loose ends; rather, the author knows where she's going and she's going to take her own time getting there. And she WILL get there. I like complex world-building stories, and this one feels like a comfortable entry-level offering. The writing doesn't have the lyrical quality of Name of the Wind, or the driving action of The First Law, but I was just as absorbed by this series as I was by those two. Kelsea, as a heroine, actually managed to feel fresh, not very cliché at all. My only complaint would have to be that the simplistic writing style felt better suited to a younger audience, and this series is definitely for older teens and adults. I don't really care about sex (and in fact there isn't much of it), and the violence wasn't notably gruesome, but there was a surprising amount of rape. At least A Song of Ice and Fire feels like an adult story. This series reads like the younger end of YA, which made it that much more jarring. I will say, though, that it does not glory in it.

All in all, though, this is an excellent series, and an author to watch.

Only reccommended for the forgiving reader, terrible worldbuilding but good underlying plot and characters

Not sure about my star rating for this one. Great underlying plot and good characters with plenty of scope for growth throughout the series but the world building is just terrible. From what I could work out some new island continent has been formed and people have emigrated there in the past from either England or America but who knows. There are lots of references to current day books and technology but some how the residents of the Tearling have reverted to some sort of early English form of Government with Kings and Nobles even though the first founder was some sort of Socialist. None of the world building makes any sense and we never find out if some sort of war or cosmic upheaval caused this new land to exist nor do we find out if the rest of the modern world still functions.

Perhaps if this distopian element was removed this would be a really good straight forward quest/adventure/fantasy book. The fact that it is already signed up for a movie directed by one of the Harry Potter directors and starring Emma Watson makes me think this is going to be one of those movies which strip out the simple story line and comes out wildly different to the book. Much of the book's good points lie in the thought process of the Heroine and I think this will be hard to capture in a movie.

If you just put the inconsistencies of the world building out of your mind you can enjoy this as a fairly typical fantasy book. Only recommended for the forgiving reader.

Enjoyable but not mind blowing

This was a pretty fun read, considering its size. At over 600 pages, I still finished it quickly. The book does a few things quite nicely but has just plenty of faults, which knock it down a few stars. It is good "beach" reading but it isn't the kind of book I'm going to run out and recommend to all my friends.

The good: That it starts out with Kelsea as queen. There's no long prologue of her as the serving woman. No two-books-worth of a fight for the kingdom.

There is no "big evil". I mean, sure, the Red Queen is a bad guy but it feels like a political thing than an a supernatural thing. More like fighting Hitler than Satan.

The point of view doesn't jump between dozens of characters. Yes, there are few chapters showing us a few other characters. But I'd say 80% of the book is focused on Kelsea's point of view. I'm tired of sprawling fantasy epics that have a different character POV every chapter.

The bad: Kelsea's companions all fall into place too easily. They're all too perfect. Pick a random woman out of the crowd to be your handmaiden? Yeah, she's got the ability to see the future. Choose a random meek priest to perform the coronation? He'll be the only priest in the world with a similar fetish for historical books. For someone who was raised in a shack with no human contact, Kelsea is remarkably lucky at picking her companions.

The bad guys are ridiculously bad. A bit of grey would have made things more interesting. Not only did the Regent steal her throne. But he also is into slavery. AND he has bad taste in art.

Not only is the handmaiden's ex-husband abusive...but he's ALSO a pedophile.

Kelsea has a number of "visions" that act as convenient deus ex machina to propel the action. She has a vision of villagers shackled into slavery and sets out to free them. Why didn't she have a vision of the people plotting that a few days in advance? Well, we needed a rousing action scene at the end of the book.

Overall, things just go too easily for Kelsea in this book. All her friends are perfect. All of her decisions work out well, no matter how impetuous or thoughtless. Even when she disappears for a week to go save the villagers, her kingdom seems to tick along just fine without her.

I don't want all of my fantasy to be grimdark but I think things could have been a bit more difficult for Kelsea.
