Excellent Resource

I have just completed a graduate course in Assessment for teachers of ELLs. Almost all of the students in this class, including me, found this book to be a very valuable resource. Some of the information is redundant, but for a teacher looking for ideas on how to construct an authentic assessment of student work (reading, writing, speaking or listening) it is full of great insights and models that can be copied from the book or revised for individual use.

The Best Assessment Book I've Seen

I bought this for an ESL Assessment class at the graduate level. I also teach ESL at a university, and this book comes in very handy, both in theory and in practice. I especially like the rubrics you give to students so they can assess their own strengths and weaknesses. For example, when working together in groups, students fill out a form after their work is done, stating how well they listened, asked for clarification, or offered/asked for opinions. I continue to use this book long after I've taken the class, and I believe this is the best assessment book out there. Don't waste your time (or money) on books like "ESL Assessment: On the Yellow Big Road to the Withered of Oz" (or whatever the title of that book is!)

Buy this book and you won't regret it. A winner!

Gregory E. Gorbett is currently an Assistant Professor--Fire & Safety Engineering Technology at Eastern Kentucky University.� Professor Gorbett specializes in the instruction and curriculum development for Fire Behavior and Combustion, Fire Dynamics, Fire Investigation, and Fire Protection Systems courses at EKU.� Gorbett holds a B.S. in Forensic Science from Trine (Tri-State) University, and a B.S. in Fire Science from the University of Maryland University College, and an M.S. in Fire Protection Engineering from Worcester Polytechnic Institute, and an M.S. in Executive Fire Service Leadership from Grand Canyon University, and is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in Fire Protection Engineering from Worcester Polytechnic Institute. Gorbett has been awarded numerous honors, including Phi Eta Sigma Honor Society, and is the recipient of an All-American Scholar Award.�� Prior to joining EKU, Professor Gorbett has been a Fire and Explosion Analyst, and a Fire and Explosion Investigator. Gorbett holds certification as a Certified Fire and Explosion Investigator (CFEI), Certified Fire Investigator (CFI), as well as certification as a Certified Fire Protection Specialist (CFPS) through the National Fire Protection Association. Gorbett serves on numerous NFPA and IFSTA Validation committees, serves on the Board of Directors for the National Association of Fire Investigators, and has been a presenter nationally at a number of fire-related conferences.�

James L. Pharr is currently Assistant Professor--Fire and Safety Engineering Technology at Eastern Kentucky University.� Professor Pharr specializes in Fire Dynamics, Building and Life Safety, Supervision, Emergency Scene Operations and Hazardous Materials Response.� Pharr received his A.S. in Fire Science Technology from Rowan Technical Institute, and a B.S. in Fire and Safety Engineering Technology from the School of Applied Science at the University of Cincinnati.� Pharr holds a M.S. in Executive Fire Service Leadership from Grand Canyon University.� Professor Pharr has also completed the Executive Fire Officer Program at the National Fire Academy in Emmitsburg, Maryland where he is an Adjunct Instructor.� Prior to joining EKU, Pharr was the Emergency Management Director and Fire Marshal in Gaston County, NC.� Pharr is a member of the International Association of Arson Investigators, and the International Association of Fire Chiefs.�� Pharr has published a number of journal articles and research papers.

India's catastrophic march on the road of development and technology is entangled with obstacles and socio-spatial gaps that need to be re-considered in the light of cultural background and historical legacy. All these issues are examined, emphasising dualistic and complimentary perspectives in the West and the East.

Rana P.B. Singh is Professor of Cultural Geography & Heritage Studies at Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi (India), and has published extensively on geographical thought, sacred geography, pilgrimage studies and heritage planning in India. His publications include 33 books and anthologies and over 180 research papers. On these themes he gave lectures in almost all parts of the world. His recent publications include Environmental Ethics (1993), The Spirit and Power of Place (1994), Cultural Landscapes and the Lifeworld (2004), Uprooting Geographical Thought in India: Toward Ecology and Culture in 21st Century (2009), and Geographical thought in India (2009).

Very funny

This is a rather unusual book, with all manner of everyday and bizarre sayings nicely translated into Latin for your amusement/education/use at a dinner party. Just as with his very funny "French for Cats", the real humour lies in the really odd things he has taken the time to translate - things like "I believe that Elvis is still alive".
It is a good fun coffee table book, and a must for any serious collector of great humour books.

A fun book...

This book is a fun book to keep on hand.

Most of the phrases are bizarre...like Sometimes I get this urge to conquer large parts of europe (interdum feror cupidine partium magnarum Europae vincendarum)but it is still a fun book.

I especially enjoy throwing in some latin phrases in email correspondence with friends to keep them guessing.

Illud iterum dicere potes!

This wonderful little book was presented to me many years ago after I had completed a Latin seminar. It was a wonderful gift, and I have found much use for the various phrases, and an extraordinary amount of humour that can be derived from the blandest of statements when translated into Latin. For example, the innocuous phrase 'Darn! There goes my beeper!' becomes quite funny in Latin:
Heu! Tintinnuntius meus sonat!
One has visions of Caesar fumbling through his tunic for some beeping object.
So, if you need a little Latin on the golf course (Alterum ictum faciam); on the tennis court (minime latum!), at the beach when spotting a shark (Pistrix! Pistrix!), or you just need to say Illud Latine dici non potest (you can't say that in Latin), you'll be prepared with this volume.
It even comes with a section on what to say when at the Vatican (where it might truly come in handy). For instance you might need to say 'Ubi possum potiri petasi similis isti?' when passing a cardinal or nun (translation: Where can I get a hat like that?).
So, don't waste your time on watching reruns of Insula Gilliganis or game shows such as Periculum and Rota Fortunae -- pick up this book today, and merge the worlds past and present.
