Got this book for my fiancee so she can get excited about camping (she says she hates the outdoors, but I don't believe her). Book gives lots of advice/tips on how to make camping a date and is not just a kamasutra type book.

A must for camping couples

This book isn't just about sex but certainly doesn't shy away from it either. It's far more about getting a reluctant partner out camping and hiking and then how to improve the odds of having romantic interludes. After that, it tells you how to plan a trip, how to get along while you are out there, how to keep clean, how to have romantic dinners and then tells you all the lovely ways of making sex possible that are only available outdoors.

The book is well written, witty and has great stories. Some stories were simply beautiful and brought a tear to my eye and some were laugh out loud funny. I especially liked "Nice Ways to Say You Stink" and the entire chapter on having sex in a canoe. There is one especially sexy story about toasting marshmallows on an open fire that I had to read twice. The illustrations by Ann Miya were a hoot and added a lot of ambiance to the book.

On top of this, there are useful information sections with recipes, romantic locations and an extensive list of on line resources.

My only real gripe is in the layout, where a large aside, taking up a page or two, can go right in the middle of a sentence. It can interrupt the flow, but is a minor point in the middle of a book with so much to offer.

This is a must for couples who like camping and hiking, but even more so for a member of a couple whose partner is resistant to the idea of camping. It suits any level, from hard core to car campers only. I can't recommend it enough for people who just want a little more spice in their life and are wondering how.

Fun to read, camper or no...

I'll admit it, I'm hardly a camper. But out of sheer curiosity I picked up this book, and have been enjoying my way through it. The writing style is fun and light, and the personal anecdotes (from the author and others) are highly amusing. Thoroughly readable, and certainly recommended (and as I said, I'm not even a camper).

Helped Me Get Started w/ Mentoring!

This book did well to help me begin initiating mentoring relationships as well as helped me respond well to requests for mentorship. It's a simple read but full of great insight and advice. I always enjoy a book that goes to great length to avoid making a simple process overly complicated. Everyone interested in understanding how to participate in mentoring relationships would benefit from Mr Lawless' book.

This short book is about one of the stranger institutions that developed in 18th-century England, the notorious Hellfire club founded by a young baronet and some other prominent men. This book does a good job of explaining the reasons for founding the club, and in outlining some of the personalities that made up the club. Briefly put, although the club was mainly about sexual excesses (in rites expressing the strong anti-Catholicism of the founders and of 18th century English aristocracy in general), several members of the club were also very important in English politics, if not adept politicians. Two of the latter kind are the fourth earl of Sandwich (best known for creating the sandwich) and the earl of Bute (the Prime Minister and the lover of George III's mother). But among the less known members were John Wilkes (a radical) and several prominent authors.
I won't go into the history of the club, except to say that what made it so interesting to contemporaries was not so much the sexual and other practices of the members (relatively routine for those days among the aristocracy), but rather the fact that the club actively sought to obtain political power for its members - and that the founder Sir Francis Dashwood (later a baron) created some rather memorable features on his estate.
The problem I have with the book is that it is basically a light entertaining read, but without any sources whatsover for its many anecdotes and other details. There is also absolutely no index, so if you are interested in a particular character, you have to find your own way through the book. I was looking at the most recent 2001 edition (a good bargain at the price), and the original editions might have this information and more. From the point of view of someone looking for light reading about the period, this rates four to four and a half stars. For someone looking for more detailed information (with sources and acknowledgements), there is more information available elsewhere although not in such a nice package. I therefore give it three stars.
Some nice touches - details about club life in London, the descriptions of Sir Francis's estate (now owned by the National Trust), the quick vignettes of the main characters/founders.
Some problems - the lack of an index, the lack of any sources or any bibliography (even in an afterword), some minor errors such as the claim that Sir Francis was "made" a baron. He in fact inherited a barony (the ancient Barony Le Despencer, now held by the Viscounts Falmouth), and at best, he petitioned the Crown to acknowledge him as Baron. This is a slightly different situation.

Light and entertaining introduction

This book serves as a very interesting and entertaining introduction into the topic; very fun reading, and provocative in a few of its statements.
Right off the bat, it should be obvious to the reader that this is not a serious analytical or academic study of the topic, but more of an overview and a baptism into the subject it treats. There are no citations, as other reviewers have mentioned. That is perhaps a downside to the book. No indices, citations, or tables of contents tells any reader from the start that this book is not trying to create a reputation for itself as a definitive reference work.
This book itself should be read for entertainment purposes, and as a teaser to draw a reader into the topic. If you're looking for a definitive history and unbiased reference and academic treatment of the subject, look elsewhere. But if you have no idea of the Hell-Fire Club in the mid 1700's involving Sir Francis Dashwood, John Wilkes, the Earl of Sandwich among others, this will definitely whet your appetite.
This book does include many references (not in an academic manner, mind you) that give a reader some insight into the rumors and myths surrounding the club scene of the 1700's and some of what life was like in England during those times. It took me a day to read this book, and I don't count it a wasted day. Fascinating reading, the book itself is well-written in an easily readable style. Names are mentioned and subjects touched on in a way to provide the reader, should he or she so choose, with the names and subjects to look into and do some more investigative reading. I know that I will.
And the cover is cool too. ...

Not historical - a work of fiction

I purchased this book thinking it was an historical non-fiction piece intending it for research. It's a pseudo-fiction (creative non-fiction?) book that rampages across a strange and unfamiliar London. An interesting if visceral and potentially disturbing read. Well written in a style that is reminiscent of William S. Burroughs and sober but more sardonic Hunter S. Thompson. Nevertheless, i'm still left looking for research materials.

it could have easily been compressed into 50 pages

I bought the book as I am now looking to buy a used car and thought this would be reliable source of information. Not so much. I find issues with both content and the book format.

Some older models are not even mentioned, so the title incorrectly refers to 90's models (for example my current car is not even listed). Instead, included are the reviews of pre-1980 Ford vehicles?! Half of the reviews are listed in the appendix and with very limited information. Some of the well-known problems for some of the very common models are not even mentioned (for example Mazda's rust issues, Matrix huge blind spots etc). Why does a major re-design warrant separate reviews for some models (like VW Beetle) in different sections of the book, but not for the other models? Why are European vehicles in a separate section? Wouldn't it just be more practical to list all vehicles by make/model alphabetically in only one list? First 200 pages of the book are advice about how to choose a car and negotiate the price; it could have easily been compressed into 50 pages. Overall, it feels like for new editions a few additional limited reviews are slapped at the end of the book, without any thought given to organizing the information.

Page margins are huge, taking away from the actual text space. Parts of the text are printed in light gray colour, difficult to read without strong light. The reviews are not divided into smaller section easy to read; instead they are all lumped together into huge paragraph. In a few instances, three car models are bundled into one review which makes it difficult to read.

I bought this book because it helped me get my car a decade ago but now it is now just a sloppy mess of incomplete data.

someone really disliked this book

One star? Ouch, someone really disliked this book. I thought it was okay. I do disagree, however, w Phil when it comes to plug ins and hybrids, but otherwise I think his viewpoints and opinions are pretty spot on. Edmonston does deflower the mystique surrounding European luxury brands. He is also pretty candid on many of the problems accompanying Toyota and the rogue acceleration problems. I did like the service bulletins he included on various brands. I also liked the court cases and decisions he included concerning differing makes and accompanying problems. He is very bullish on the Korean makes, although he does remind us that current quality standards have not always been a Korean reality with motorcars. I think his estimation of the future of Volvo is inaccurate. Yes, they are Chinese owned now, but from what I have read the Chinese are giving the Swedes a good amount of autonomy in the development and production of the cars. He tells us which brands and models are good values and which are not. He also reminds us that it is better to buy used and to avoid new cars as a result of introductory engineering and manufacturing problems. Phil does give a back hand slap to those who write for North American car mags. He calls them little short of shills for the manufacturers who pay their bills and offer them lavish junkets around the globe. Overall an enjoyable book. There are several problems with certain models of cars I was unaware of. Neither my Volt nor my wife's Prius scored well with Phil. I take issue with his views on several points here, as for us they have been terrific cars. He does tend to cite JD Powers and Consumer Reports frequently, which is a big plus with me. If you like cars and realize that purchasing one is a major decision, this book would be worth your while.

This book could be the best investment you'll ever make

If you could only buy one book to help you buy a used car, this is it. It is by FAR better than anything else out there. I checked this out from my local library after looking through everything they had about buying a used car. Just glancing at everything else and then flipping through this one told me everything else was nearly worthless compared to this. I took this home and devoured it. Ended up buying a single-owner off-lease 2011 (2.5 years old) Honda Accord EX-L with 38,000 miles with a Honda Pre-used Certified Warranty for $16,000 from a dealer two hours from where I live. The carfax required by Honda showed me the brief history of the car and the fact that the dealer had it on his lot for 104 days and would therefore be desperate to sell. The car was pristine in and out. The service manager put the car on a rack and gave me a car great car lesson as we looked underneath, which amazingly looked new as well, not even any parking lot stop-block scratches on the front cowling underneath. The car had a brand new Honda battery, windshield, brake pads, brake rotors, fluids, up-to-date microcode, and brand new tires.

This book also confirmed everything I already knew about the ridiculously expensive parts and repair for European and hybrid autos, and it confirmed a large number of things about what cars to avoid and why that I had learned over the years from a very good friend who owned and operated a professional auto repair shop for 20 years.

Do yourself a favor and buy this book and carefully study it before buying a used car. It'll be one of the best investments you'll ever make.
