The most scholarly and easy to read book on the long histroy of Iran

I am no book critic. I have been reading and enjoying Dr. Katouzian's books for twenty years. This book brings together his vast and scholarly knowledge of 2500 years of Iranian history. No writer has achieved this. The narrative is very fluid and easy to read and understand, despite the sometimes complex subjects. I could not wait to finish it, so that I could start reading it again.

If you are an Iranian, then you owe it to yourself to read this book. If you have adult children, please encourage them to read it. If you have young children, save this book in a safe place, and let them read it when they grow up.

Finally, if you are interested in modern Iran, his two books about Musaddiq and the Emergence of the Pahlavis are unsurpassed for their quality of research and writing. You can find these and his other works on Amazon.

Very good, if a bit confusing at times, history of Iran's development

Prof. Katouzian shows how the Iranian "social DNA" developed over centuries in a way to desire emproers who had a divine favor, similar to China's mandate from heaven, but how that favor in Iran often was more fickle than the Chinese mandate. Problems of succession plagued many dynasties in the past, and can be seen in the post-Khomenei days of today.

So, there's nothing new under the sun today, but it's been a long time developing.

For the period of the last 125 years or so, most likely to interest Americans, this is a good overview. But, before that, the past gets skimmed at many times.

There's little on the glories of the Achaemenids. Nor is there anything beyond the superficial on the founding and development of Zoroastrianism. The one thing new I learned about Iran's religious is that apparently it was NOT Shi'a majority until forcible conversion in a dynasty of the 1600s.

There's some other things missing, speaking of that.
1. A good glossary of religious terms.
2. A two-paged, nicely sized map of the country, or more than one. A geological map would be nice as part of this. So would better mapping of ancient and modern political division.
3. More discussions of Iranians' relations with Turks, over nearly 1,000 years of Turkish slaves passing through on the way to forming various dynasties, plus the Turkic presence fronting different Iranian empires in Transoxania. It's clear that Iran has many Turkish, as well as Arabic, loan words.

Anyway, I don't have further comparison because this is the first in-depth history of Iran I've read.

Excellent overview of Iranian history for a general reader

This book is an interpretative history of Iran from the Achaemenid empire until today. It is intended for a general reader and not for scholars. The book is prefaced by a chapter in which the author describes his overall analysis of Iranian culture and the impact of history on Iranian psychology. This chapter alone is worth the price of the book. The first two and a half millennia of Iranian history are covered in only 150 pages. Thus Iran's ancient past receives only the most glancing overview. Unfortunately the author seeks to provide a chronology of almost every significant event in this immense period of time and this makes for a somewhat difficult read. I found that I often had difficulty following the course of so many events covered so briefly. The bulk of the book is concentrated on 20th century Iran. Although the author has firm opinions about the individuals who have figured in recent Iranian history, I believe that his treatment is fair. He documents the reasons for his judgements and his analysis is not only quite believable but, in my opinion, convincing. In particular, I felt that his coverage of the era of Mohammad Mosaddeq as prime minister was well balanced and enlightening. The U.S participation in the coup to overthrow Mosaddeq is so often cited as a justifiable source of hostility toward the U.S. that it was most helpful to understand 1) The basis for Iranian sensitivity regarding western intervention in Iranian affairs and 2) the domestic Iranian circumstances that made Mosaddeq's ouster likely in the first place. Katouzian attributes the 1979 revolution primarily to mismanagement on the part of both Reza Shah and his son, Mohammed Reza Shah. In particular, the unwillingness of either of the two Pahlavis to build toward a constitutional monarchy, insisting instead upon a traditional Iranian autocracy, doomed their regime. In summary, this book seeks to provide an interpretation of the history of Iran that will assist the reader in understanding contemporary Iran. I believe that it is completely successful in this regard. It is a slightly tedious read due to the copious detail it offers but the reward is worth the effort.

Overall this is an excellent book and covers more firearms than most of its kind, however, there were several firearms that had no photographs and definitely should have. The absence of photographs for weapons with a plethora of readily available photos such as the Bizon and thr MAC 50 could only be described by laziness or cost cutting, either of which seems unacceptable in such a volume. There's really no excuse, hence three stars.

This is a Christmas gift for a "gun person" so I didn't do anything to it except look at the cover and scan a few pages but it was much bigger than I envisioned. I am totally satisfied with my purchase and hope the recipient will be also at Christmas time. (I hope he doesn't have one already.)

Did Para-Ordnance Fund The Writing?

This book was given to me as a birthday gift, and overall I am pleased. There is a good deal of small arms history presented that is well worth reading, and the number of rifles, handguns, and full-auto weapons listed with accompanying photographs make this nice addition to the library.

That said, I don't get the feeling the publishing was completely unbiased, as I would hope for something claiming to be an encyclopedia. The back cover states the it "Features all the most significant and famous firearms." However, after spending 20 minutes with book I already discovered the lack of, among others, the Smith & Wesson Model 27 and Sig P210. Indeed S&W only get a dedicated four pages in the entire handgun section. Who get's a dedicated full seven pages? Para-Ordnance. Huh? No discussion of S&W's flagship revolver or the (arguably) best semi-automatic military sidearm ever made, but each and every clone of the 1911 made by Para-Ordnance gets a photo and full paragraph? Furthermore, regarding the picture of the 1911 on the cover? It's not a Colt, but a Para-Ordnance. Taurus was also apparently more deserving of dedicated space than either Colt or Smith and Wesson.

Now, I have no fundamental problem with a book like this being partly advertisement for the writer's funders, so long as they're honest about it. However, I have yet to find any such disclaimer.

This is an exciting account of Churchill's relationship to the Jewish people from the earliest phase of his political career. He developed a strong bond with the developing state of Israel, and it seems unlikely, without his brilliant supportive speeches in parliament for several decades that we would have a state of Israel today. Gilbert does a superb job of bringing us up to date on Churchill's contributions, from the time of the Balfour declaration to Israel Statehood in 1948.

Extremely Pleased, and I've Been Waiting a Long Time for a Book Such as This

This coffee table book is the answer to my search for a decent book devoted to eyewear, such that I've sought for many a year. I am not an optical professional but a long-time eyewear aficionado, who maintains his own eyewear forum, "Ken's Eyewear Club" as a Google Club (now a Google Group) since 1999; https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/kenseyewearclub/info

Sure there are are other eyewear books. Chic simple: Eyeglasses is wonderful - I love it - but it's from the '90s and just doesn't cover what a true coffee table book can with many large, colorful pages. Another small book I've seen, which goes through a number of designers/brands, doesn't have most names I'd like to see, only devotes two pages or so to each, and it's written by someone who's into collectibles in general and happened to decide to write on eyewear. Cult Eyewear was written, in contrast, by Neil Handley - a Britisher who has long worked with eyewear history as a museum curator as well as being a leader in optical-related organizations and a writer on ophthalmic antiques. Other small eyewear books concentrate on one collection or particularly bizarre or humorous frames.

There are coffee table books on eyewear concentrate on what people wore hundreds of years ago and then, if they get up to the past century or so, they still don't cover a lot of makers - not their standard designs, their most important designs historically, or their most interesting designs.

Cult Eyewear covers all of this. It starts with a handful of pages covering eyewear history in general (mainly European) and basically up to the time of the "fashion designers." I was, I must say, a little surprised Handley doesn't cover the possible Far Eastern origin of eyewear , but - oh well.... He then then takes many brands/designers in the chronological order in which he feels they reached their major importance (a most unusual, but intelligent, way of determining chronological order). There is somewhat of a British slant as to selection and history, but the author surely included many makers of many nations. Some companies are mentioned in the text but did not get a devoted space among chapters; there is an Index to bring these out (except presumably, by error, Oliver Peoples is mentioned several times in the book - and rightly so - but it is not in the Index).

As of 2015, the book goes almost to the very present. Handley covers most of the brands I'd like to see, one way or another, and I certainly can't expect him to cover all those or even some that I'd like to see (e.g. Lunor, Gold and Wood, ProDesign, Moscot, Paul Smith, Robert Marc, Morgenthal Frederics, Dakota Smith, Anne & Valentin, Chrome Hearts). There are far, far more brands/designers than in any other volume I've seen to date. I'm learning an awful lot from this book regarding the historical importance and design importance of certain makers, and also I'm finding some styles appeared earlier than I had thought. I also like the way the author refers to the frames favored by famous personalities. In some ways this volume resembles Cult Watches, by the same publisher, and also Celebrity Watches, which I own.

So I'm extremely happy with the book, with the exception of a few not-so-positive side comments I made above. I'm baffled why the book hasn't appeared in any Cleveland area stores or public libraries, as far as I know, and how inexpensive it is in the sources I've been finding. I got an unused copy, with the slightest waterlog-related warping evident, for under $10 on Amazon, including postage. When I first saw the online prices I was suspicious about the quality of the book's production but I see nothing differentiating it from so many more expensive coffee table volumes. Actually, I see a price of $49.95 on the jacket so why, when the book came out only four years ago, are so many copies - new or used - available for so little? There are beautiful photographs (mostly color) and other illustrations and the book is truly beautifully written. I highly recommend Cult Eyewear for anyone really into the subject (including opticians!) or for anyone who might want to get more knowledgeable about this fascinating world.

This is by far the most interesting read on eyewear ever produced. The eyewear industry has always been elusive when it comes to the history of the best brands ever produced in the later half of the twentieth century their methods kept secret. Here for the first time is a glimpse into the actual companies that produced some of the most iconic and collectible eyewear available ever. An eyeopening book! I would love to see the author write another book on the manufacturing and design processes themselves showing how handmade frames from acetate to wood are actually produced, where the materials come from, how the production changes made or kept over the years has affected the product and where is eyewear production headed in the future? New materials, techniques, designs, function over fashion and the post apocalyptic vision!

Not actionable

I found that this book was not particularly actionable, and recycled a lot of content which Altucher has previously published online and in other books of his. Altucher tries to redefine wealth in non-monetary terms, and then speaks abstractly about how to maximize his redefined version of wealth. While it's a snappy title, I don't feel like I learned anything useful from reading it. One major flaw is that Altucher frequently uses himself as a case study, when many of his accomplishments are path-dependent on his prior accomplishments.

The Choose Yourself Guide to Wealth is a James Altucher instance classic. In fact, I’ve been searching for over 15 years for a book like this. I believe it will ultimately be worth at least $1 million – possibly $10 million or more – to me by the time I’ve put it to good use.

If you work in a cubicle all day, perhaps at Proctor and Gamble, and have a feeling deep in your gut that something ain’t right, that the college degree and the corporate gig that you’d been told would set you free just isn’t what it was cracked up to be, then this book is for you. Inside James provides a practical, real constructive, strategy for breaking free from the grind. To Choose Yourself. To navigate past the gate keepers and to experience a life of physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual abundance. These are the exact techniques James used to create this life for himself. I highly recommend you pick up a copy.

A Uniquely Important Book for YOU

This is just the book I needed to read, because society at large has always been unreal
to me, artificial, unjust, and frankly, just insane.

Altucher gives you two vital things in this book, maybe three:

He knows how the game of life is changing and what is coming here.

He understands how to make an income more certainly to match the new changes here.

While doing this he understands true service to others and how your income can and
should be tied to actual help to others which will bring you true happiness and money too.

He went through very stressful & depressed times but had the guts to find the true sources
of these things and correct them in his life to his and everyone's benefit.

I applaud his sense of Ethics and Morality and how it came out great for him.
He ended up with money, but not from Greed, but from caring about others.

This book is a must own one, that hopefully more will read, so we have a better life for ALL.
It can do the same for you.

About the Author

Bob Bryla has more than 20 years of experience in MIS, ranging from database and data warehouse design to system administration on multiple hardware platforms. He is currently lead designer and data analyst for Land’s End's online store database and handles the DBA activities on Land’s End Oracle Internet databases.

Kevin Loney was named Consultant of the Year by Oracle Magazine in 2002. He is an internationally recognized expert in the design, development, and administration and tuning of Oracle databases. An Oracle developer and database administrator since 1987, Loney has designed and implemented both transactional processing systems and data warehouses.

Simple, precise and easy to understand

This book is written in very simple, precise, straight forward and easy to understand language. There are tons of day to day usage SQLs and examples for everyday dba. Good amount of details in advanced topics like external tables, flashback, SQL replay, advanced security etc., Very useful Hitchhiker's guides and also a cd with code and ebook included. Over all the content is nicely presented.

This is a very important addition to the library of EVERY Oracle professional

I just finished reading through "Oracle Database 12c - The Complete Reference". If you have been using Oracle for a while you are familiar with the title - Kevin and Bob have been publishing revised versions of the book for quite a while. And as the title says, this is not a tutorial or a how-to book. It is a reference book of many of the important topics that an Oracle professional will need to know in order to work effectively with 12c

The chapters cover the material you would think they would cover. Including the new CDB and PDB concepts in 12c. Also important newer - but not new - topics like VPD, TDE, SQL Replay. I was happy to find sections on Tuning but saw little on Data Guard and RMAN. As a DBA, I am not that interested in topics such as XML, Object-SQL, and Java. I would like to see the RAC section be larger. But overall, it is a very important addition to the library of EVERY Oracle professional. Keep the book at home, but keep the electronic copy of the book (on an include CD) with you everywhere.

Missing details about Oracle 12c's Pluggable Database architecture

In my opinion this book is missing details about Oracle 12c's Pluggable Database architecture. I expected specific content about both EM Express and Single/Multitenant configurations due to the subtitle of the book "Administer and Secure a Robust Cloud Based Environment". Although the old database architecture is still available for use, Oracle recommends new 12c databases utilize the single or multitenant pluggable database configuration. There are some screenshots of a CDB/PDB installation, (6 pages on Pluggable Databases in total) but other than that there are very few pages which detail administration tasks and specific architecture information within a "Cloud database" single tenant/ multitenant configuration in 12c. On the other hand, the book does holds good content as a quick reference guide and overview on many different aspects of Oracle databases. Perhaps for new DBAs, this book would be a welcome asset for those who like a quick dictionary type look up of any and all things Oracle on their bookshelf. However, for a more seasoned DBA it doesn't contain the depth I expected strictly based on the titile and subtitile.
