Legal English in a Law-School 'Nutshell' Approach

This texbook is British-based in content and terminology, and is published by the Cambridge University Press. It includes 15 units divided according to the most common topical areas of law practice, and comes with audio CDs and practice tests. This text is basically exercise-driven, composed primarily of terminology and comprehension exercises including reading, speaking, listening and analyzing activities. The International Legal English Certificate (ILEC) can be taken at the conclusion by passing the related exam. The ILEC certificate is a fine addition to one's CV/resume, in particular for those working with law in non-native English countries. The topic index is rather comprehensive but may not cover the area of law that you practice in, so check before purchasing if you are looking for exercises in your particular area of practice.

I have taught this book in the ILEC course several times, and find the book amazingly clever and succinct. The variety of materials and exercises work together well. The English level is average-to-advanced. For exercises that actually help to cement understanding, it is the best legal English book I've seen. Overall: thorough and very well constructed. There are also a few exercises online that compliment it. One can study it alone, but it is much more fun to take the course - if you can find it offered in your area.

A few weaknesses

My overall impression of the book is positive. However, I would like to mention some of its weaknesses:
1) Terminology is at times inadequately explained.
2) There is sometimes no clear connection between the definition of a term as explained in the chapter and as given in the glossary.
3) Not enough examples of the terms as they would be used in context.

What's more, the accompanying teacher's book is not always useful for clarification of the terminology and the adequate examples of the terms in use are sometimes lacking in depth and breadth.

Based on these weaknesses, do not rely solely on this book for preparation in proficiency in Legal English!
A note to teachers: You will not be able to rely on the teacher's and student's book alone if you wish to be adequately prepared for class!

Contents include how to avoid culture shock; Vietnamese attitudes and values; historical and political background; religion, customs, and traditions; the Vietnamese at home; leisure, social, and cultural life; dos, don'ts, and taboos; body language; hospitality, food, and drink; giving and receiving gifts; business briefing; and language and communications. That's a lot to cover in 168 pages in a pocket sized book. I'd also recommend "Vietnam Today" by Mark A. Ashwill for a little more depth.

Out of Date

This might have been a little useful five years ago when it was first published, but it is quite out of date in 2011. I would not recommend purchasing it until, and if, it is updated. Vietnamese people have really moved forward in the last decade and are currently a bustling and very capitalistic society. Also, it is relatively superficial and provides relatively little of practical use.

Vietnam - Land of Smiles!

It's a clich� in our consumer-oriented world to say that yet another new device or accessory is "must-have". Even so, I don't hesitate to say that for the intending traveller to Vietnam this little book, clearly designed to fit easily into the pocket or backpack pouch, is a must-have item.
I write with some authority because, although I've not yet been to Vietnam, I have a Vietnamese wife who in turn has Vietnamese children and numerous relatives and friends from her homeland and who now live here in Australia.
This means that my exposure to many aspects of their culture has been and is reached from the privileged position of head of our small family. I can therefore vouch for the accuracy of much of the excellent advice Mr Murray has provided in this book.
That I can't give my blessing to the whole of the contents is not a reflection on the author, or those contents, but rather is my bowing to his vastly superior knowledge of both the people and the land he describes. In other words I found, in spite of my experience, there was much for me to learn, and indeed one reading is not sufficient to take in and retain all that he has to offer.
In recent years Vietnam has been re-discovered. After decades of civil war followed by more decades of dislocation and isolation this little country is finally emerging again, and in doing so is giving the lie to the view that it is a hostile place. Far from it, visitors from around the world are being surprised by its beauty and charm.
So, if you're planning a trip to the land of these friendly and hospitable people, or even if you're merely curious about them, their ancient culture, and their long and fascinating history, I can only repeat, "Culture Smart - VIETNAM" by Geoffrey Murray is a compact, sensitive, authoritative, informative, easy-to-read, must-have.

Tom A. Jones was the founder and editor-in-chief of DPI for nine years. He is currently a teacher in the Greater Nashville Church. He is also the author of numerous books including Mind Change, No One Like Him, and Strong in the Grace. Steve D. Brown and his wife have been missionaries to Argentina and have also served in the ministry in Boston, Los Angeles, Dallas, and Nashville. He now lives in the Rio Grande Valley of Texas and serves as a teacher for the church. Together with Tom, he authored One Another: Transformational Relationships in the Body of Christ.

Good Point, good inrto to Volume 2

This book makes a simple but profound point if you think about it. I like to think I understand the difference between living life here on hearth and what it will be like in Heaven, but this adds the dimension of presenting us living life here as if we were already in Heaven. That's my take away. Volume 2 brings it all home with just how we can implement it, with encouragement to the leaders of the International Church of Christ [author's ministry] becoming less legalistic. I believe that God will truly bless the church that takes this Biblical teaching to heart.

this book smashes a lot of traditional theories and assumptions about what the kingdom is and introduces amuch more biblically based and seriously brain-twisting understanding. the second book is brilliant and eye-opening as well. can't wait to get my hands on book 3!

Honest Review

5 amazing, mentally disturbed Stars

Let me start by saying for those of you who focus solely on the fluffy romance books, with a happy ever after, this book is more than likely not for you. However, for those who are fans of dark reads (and let me tell you I thought the first book was the darkest book I'd ever read) then prepare to be taken on one hell of a journey, because this second installment is hands down the darkest book I have ever had the pleasure of reading.

I can say with absolute certainty there is not one character in this book, other than Ivy (for now), who is not warped in someway. If you were to read about these characters in real life, if this story was to appear in the news, you would be hoping and praying that they were caught, convicted and thrown in a maximum security mental facility, never to be heard of again.

However, as is often the case in the fictional world, you may find yourself actually liking one or two characters and despite me hating Roman with a vengeance in book one, I found him to be almost loveable in this book, although I really do use that term loosely.

As a fan of pretty much all genres of fiction, It is not often that I am shocked and haunted by scenes, even ones of torture, so let me put it into context. Certain scenes in this book literally had me scared to read any more. If I could have dived behind the sofa, because I was to afraid to read on, I would have. I winced and squirmed through so many scenes in this book.

Some may wonder why anyone would want to read something like that and in all honesty, I can't tell you, but Kimber S Dawn, as lovely as you most likely are, you have one twisted imagination and made me feel things and have empathy with characters I shouldn't have and that is why I loved this book. Yes, I enjoy a hearts and flowers kind of romance, but sometimes you just need a book so dark, you wonder whether you will be able to come out the other side and quite frankly I don't think I did.

A new level of dark and twisted

Roman's Redemption held a lot of promise in the title. I had very mixed feelings from the first book, and took a lot of time to process the outcome. While waiting for this follow up to release, I enjoyed the teasers and was excited to find out more about Mace and her role in the story. Despite my background in dark and twisted books, I was not prepared for Mace's story.

This storyline does have all the components of a dark erotic novel. Being in the mind of several dark minds caused me to put this book down a lot! It was something I couldn't read in a few days. I felt the story was a bit choppy, but it could because I was reading it in sections at a time.

This book does end in a slight cliffhanger, but I am told by the author that the next book will be focused on a different couple. I hope we will be able to wrap up Roman & Heather's story in that book.

Will I read it? Probably. I'm curious enough to need the outcome of their story.

I gave this book 4 out of 5 stars because it does follow the criteria of it's genre. As a blogger, I try not to let so many personal opinions get in the way when I'm on the fence about content. I do love this author and will continue to read her stories.

Dark and twisted and...

...not in an erotica way. This had some sick and disturbing scenes in it so beware. It was definitely more hardcore than book 1 and that's saying something. I enjoyed it but I did feel that, at times, the story got away from the author. There was a lot going on... lots of side stories. It didn't take away from my enjoyment but gave the book kind of a crazy train feel. Don't know, maybe that was the point.

CLEAR OUT THE RISK IN A FAMILY BUSINESS

This is an excellent book for anyone who wants to know how to make a family business work. David Bork and his associates are professionals at determining where the business has gone off the rails and putting together a plan that works for your distinct business. Bork has a shorter book with tips for those not familiar with what a family business consultant can do, but this book, Bork's original one, tells the stories that family businesses in trouble can easily relate to and move past the problem to prosperity.

Insight and Solid Advice

The use of a composite family in a family business was very helpful in bringing out many complex issues. This book was very readable and gave me a much better understanding of family systems theory. If you work in a family business or are a family member in a family business, this book will help you gain valuable insight. It has taught me how to solve many of the problems I was having with my siblings.

Pulpy, Fast-Paced Fun

Part Starship Troopers (movie, not book), and part Matrix, this is a solid indie effort. Disclaimer: Mr. James was kind enough to mail me a printed copy of his book in exchange for an honest review. First, a word about the book itself...

Apparently, Mr. James prints and binds these paperbacks himself. He does a gorgeous job of it. The text is printed in an easy to read font, each page incorporates a cool and unique page-numbering system, and the front & back covers have fold-out wings that can be used as book-marks. Very nice!

I also enjoyed the story contained within. The writing style is direct and moves the plot along fairly quickly. The opening is very reminiscent of Heinlein's "Starship Troopers". From there, it veers into its own territory... Peter Garvey, the main character, is easy to identify with. He is the 'all-American' style of protagonist that signs up to go defend his world after an alien attack. Of course, military life isn't exactly what he was expecting. Especially when there is a deeper mystery lurking in the background. I could tell early on that there would be a twist at the end but, until it arrived, I wasn't entirely sure how it would pan out. Once we got there, I thought it was handled pretty well.

My only quibble with the story is that there is almost too much action. That's sort of a strange thing to complain about considering how many books suffer from an excess of exposition but, in this instance, with one hair-breadth escape after another, it started wearing a bit thin after a while. Without introducing spoilers, I can see how the action is integral to the plot but I was wishing for a little more character development and world-building along the way.

Nevertheless, if you like SF stories with lots of space battles and a mystery to solve, you should get this book. I found it to be an entertaining read that I blazed through in only two days.

War Is Hell -- in Space!

Good science fiction often isn't about the future, but the present. It uses a fictional context to explore philosophical or sociological problems that cannot easily be tackled head-on. It's hard to find something new to say about war in our own age of endless warfare, but Brett James does it.

The novel takes a hard look at the concept of the soldier as a kind of disposable commodity -- one that can be recycled. It also creates a vivid picture of the actual distance that a society often puts between itself and its armed conflicts. The result is a portrait of the effects of physical, psychological, and emotional emptiness that can surround a man in battle, which is also personified by the blankness of space itself.

But don't think that this is some heavy-handed tome filled with deep symbolism and ponderous metaphor -- James weaves an entertaining yarn, one filled with adventure, love, loss, and drama, which delivers its thoughtful themes in context of enough pulpy action to keep me simultaneously entertained and thinking -- exactly what I want out of a science fiction novel.

Not for me.

It didn't start out well for me. Some kind of Heinleinesque airdrop where thousands upon thousands of soldiers are thrown at a faceless enemy for no discernible purpose. The equipment is high tech, the casualty rates are staggering and tactics seem as clever as shoving soldiers into WWI machine gun barrages wholesale.

Then the protagonist dies.

And is revived. He meets a nurse and remembers an oddly idyllic life, straight out of Norman Rockwell, from before his enlistment.

Another battle soon follows, with as little military logic or interest as the first. The protagonist dies, again.

You learn a bit more about him each time he is brought back to life. Enough for him to understand that there is something very very odd going on. And for you, the reader, to also wonder about the stark simplicity of his surroundings and the army he's fighting in. Those are the better parts of this book, but they do not shine all that much either.

Rinse and repeat, many times, before the ending where things are explained in the last twenty pages or so. All of a sudden, the odd one-dimensionality of the army he is fighting in does make sense. So does the overwhelming sense of being a cog in the machine.

Another reviewer called this "The Forever War for a new generation". There are echoes of that in the revelations of the end, yes. In the real world, our countries send soldiers to fight in foreign lands, but, except for military families and their friends, our connection to the people doing the dying is distant.

If it had been a much shorter book, perhaps a short story, then the ending might have been worth it. But, for me, the combat sequences were never very enjoyable to read, didn't fit any clear narrative, drag on and were quite disorienting. During the periods between the battles you discover bit by bit what is going on, but I never really got to care much for the main character and everyone else is barely developed.

By the time I got to the end, I was just happy to be done. YMMV.
