About the Author
Richard S. Quimby is an Associate Professor of physics at Worcester Polytechnic Institute.��He�earned a BS in EE/Physics at Clarkson College of Technology in 1975 and a PhD in Physics at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, in 1979.�He has been actively involved in research relating to photonics devices such as fiber lasers and fiber amplifiers since the 1980's.� His work has resulted in approximately 35 publications, as well as three invited conference presentations. He also is a contributor to the book FLUORIDE GLASS FIBER OPTICS (Academic Press 1991).

Best intro to photonics for electrical engineers

It has always been difficult to find a book that is a good introduction to photonics, since the existing books in the field either aim to high and get bogged down in mathematics or aim too low and end up being hobbyist books on the subject. The audience for this book is the college undergraduate who is likely a nonphysics major - most likely an engineering student - who is looking for an introduction to the subject. The other audience would be the professional who wants to come up to speed in photonics by learning the fundamentals in a format that is accessible to him/her. You should already be familiar with your freshman physics, specifically mechanics, electricity and magnetism, waves, and a dash of modern physics. Also, knowledge of differential and integral calculus is assumed plus ordinary differential equations. Maxwell's equations are discussed, but there are no derivations involved.

The author makes sure that mathematical concepts do not get in the way of the physical concepts. He does this by giving physical arguments that lead to an intuitive understanding wherever possible. However, sufficient mathematical detail is included so that you should get a good understanding of the quantitative nature of the field as well. The combined coverage of photonics and lasers in a single book is unusual. However, it does lend itself to a better understanding of waveguiding and optical communications, which rely on an understanding of both fields.

The thing I like best about the book is the abundance of numerical examples with detailed solutions and electrical analogs used as illustrations that are found throughout. It really helps those of us with electrical engineering backgrounds who feel we really don't get a subject unless we can quantify something. The examples usually lead the way to solving the included exercises, but the one shortcoming of the book is that there are no solutions to either even or odd problems included.

If you are a student, I highly recommend this book even if you are using Saleh's Photonics as a text. This book will give you a clearer understanding for the quantitative issues.

Like Reading a Gripping Novella

I bought this book several years ago for reference and yesterday I really needed it. I needed to understand certain nonlinear effects in optical fibers: pronto! I have a theoretical physicist background, but I'm not an expert in FO. I'm quite comfortable, indeed prefer, the mathematical framework of coupled NLS or Manakov-PMD equations, but it's much easier to navigate the various approximating assumptions in those formalisms when you possess a clear intuitive understanding of the physics.

Chapter 9 contained most of the background I was looking for. Moreover, it was like reading a gripping novella--I simply couldn't put it down. Nearly every sentence was a revelation. At no point did I feel like I had to slog through the explanations. That chapter covers everything from dielectric distortion, SHG, wave-mixing, Kerr effect, and even optical solitons; all in a highly illuminating way (if I can use that expression). Quimby has a superb writing style that manages to maintain a delicate balance between appealing to physical intuition and yet provide just enough math to convince the reader of technical consistency with Maxwell's equations. The plentiful and perspicuous diagrams that complement the text (roughly one per page) are just as valuable as Quimby's writing style. Truly, a great introductory text and reference work.

Some disappointing omissions include such things as phase-conjugate mirrors and superlensing (negative refractive index), but these topics could be added comfortably in a new edition.

A Practical Resource for Transforming Suffering Into Purposeful Living

All of us have asked the questions, “Why do good people suffer? Why do I have to suffer when I believe in Jesus, and He has promised new life, healing, and goodness to me?” In Jeff Cavins’ new book, When You Suffer: Biblical Keys for Hope and Understanding, he offers readers a refreshing (but not new) perspective on why we suffer and how to suffer well.

Cavins takes the reader back to Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden, where the first sin occurred. He relates that event to the Crucifixion, in which Jesus became sin. Jesus showed us how to live by way of carrying our own crosses, but the concept of “offering it up” has become convoluted and cliched to many (cradle) Catholics who heard it ad nauseum growing up. Consider this quote from When You Suffer:

"The gospel of Jesus Christ is not just about dying, which is where many people stop. He came to show us how to live, and in showing us how to live, he showed us how to suffer. If we really want an understanding of suffering, we need to look deeply into the life of Jesus."

Most of us don’t desire suffering, even if we’ve come to accept it as an inevitable part of our life’s journey. The problem isn’t that we know we must suffer, but that we haven’t really learned how to suffer well. Cavins explains through simplicity and wisdom that suffering is meaningless unless we learn to unite our moral and physical suffering to the suffering of Jesus. It’s ultimately an act of the will, in which we say, “Jesus, I offer this up to You for (your intention).”

Because of Cavins’ extensive knowledge of Scripture, he is able to relate his points back to the Bible. One such reference included St. Paul’s letter to the Colossians (1:24) that states:

"Now I rejoice in my sufferings for your sake, and in my flesh I am filling up what is lacking in the afflictions of Christ on behalf of his body, which is the church…"

Cavins explains beautifully that Jesus’ sacrifice on the Cross was not defective or incomplete, but that He – as the Head of the Church – wants us to compensate for the Body – which is the Church. This incredible analogy succinctly describes why we are called to suffer with Jesus. All of our afflictions are permitted by God for a grander purpose, which is to draw us out of ourselves and focusing on our pain into the Heart of Jesus and bringing Him our offering of pain as intercessory payment. Essentially, when we offer up our hardships to Jesus on someone else’s behalf, we can view it as “heavenly cash” (p. 95) that is paid for someone else’s benefit.

Using anecdotal examples of how Cavins has learned to suffer in this way, the reader gleans how the principles of When You Suffer are put into practice. The final chapter provides ten tips on what to do when facing despair, how to pray through suffering (especially using devotions, such as the rosary and Seven Sorrows of Mary), and how forgiveness is a form of healing in suffering. When You Suffer is a must-read for anyone who has questioned why misfortune or constant hardship has befallen him, because he will be encouraged and uplifted to discover the treasure hidden in the midst of his pain. A valuable grief resource, When You Suffer could be used in bereavement ministries (such as Stephen Ministry) or group study, especially during Lent.

Finding a Purpose in Suffering

In When You Suffer: Biblical Keys for Hope and Understanding, Jeff Cavins tackles the difficult question of why a good God allows us to suffer and what we can do to make that suffering have value in our lives. He defines suffering as anything that makes our life less than ideal, so this can include life’s minor inconveniences as well as the heavy-duty suffering that can come with physical, mental, or emotional pain.

Cavins separates suffering into two categories: physical and moral. Physical is temporal, of this earth. It is temporary. Moral, on the other hand, can have eternal consequences and lead to the loss of eternal life. He also states that there are different purposes for suffering. Punitive is suffering as the result of sin. In a statement that many people today would be uncomfortable with, he maintains that God does punish us, but He does it for our good. However, not all suffering is punishment for sin. Some suffering is probative, or a testing of our faith. Other suffering is disciplinary, in which God is trying to educate us, once again for our benefit.

Cavins also calls into question our modern understanding of what it means for God to be good. The ancient Greeks believed that to be happy was to be good. Whereas we tend to equate “happiness with feeling good.” Cavins quotes Peter Kreeft who states, “By ancient standards, God might be good even though he lets us suffer, if he does it for the sake of the greater end of happiness, perfection of life and character and soul, that is, self.”

Is there meaning in our suffering? Cavins’ unequivocal answer is yes, provided that our “suffering is joined with the suffering of Christ.” Anyone raised Catholic has probably been told to “offer it up” when complaining about one thing or another. Here is where that comes in. We are called to share in Christ’s suffering. St. John Paul II maintained that “nothing was lacking in Christ’s suffering, but so that we might know the love of God more deeply, Christ has made room in the suffering for us to participate in it.” But this doesn’t happen by default. We have to will our sufferings to be united with His.

Cavins also discusses some practical ideas for how to cope when you are suffering. He states that “suffering gives you the opportunity to grow . . . [into] a holier person, a more patient person, a person who endures, a person who is kinder, a person who is more merciful. All of this is the fruit of suffering in your life.” That doesn’t necessarily make it easier to accept. For that reason, Cavins offers a list of “Ten Things to Do When You Suffer,” which includes such items as entrusting yourself to God, going to Confession, praying the Rosary, and keeping an eternal perspective.

Cavins has tackled the subject of suffering well. The question of why we suffer has always plagued humanity and will no doubt continue to do so. When one is in pain, no glib answers will suffice. One subject Cavins doesn’t touch on is why young babies and children have to suffer, which is even more difficult to accept than adult suffering. Still, for someone who wants to learn more about a theology of suffering or who is struggling to find meaning and value in a pain-filled existence, When You Suffer may offer the answers that they need.

A book that helps you find meaning in suffering

When You Suffer is the second book from Jeff Cavins in his recent "Biblical Keys" series. The first book was entitled Praise God and Thank Him and focused on a joyful life. This latest book focuses on hope and understanding for moments of suffering. With that theme and the purple book cover, this book screams LENT! So I figured, that would be a good time to read through it and share it with you. The book begins with a chapter on the notion of an "ideal life." That concept is hard to grasp, so he narrows it down to an ideal day. After thinking about your ideal day, which involves doing things you enjoy doing, he broadens us back to an ideal life, which involves a predictable life, comfort, and one that reflects your gifts. Unfortunately, real life is never like the ideal life. Real life is uncomfortable and full of suffering.

This leads to the next chapter, which discusses the meaning of suffering. He doesn't dive into the weighty Scripture on making your suffering mean something, but instead gives us two concrete examples of people (one being Pope John Paul II) who took their suffering and made it matter. Chapter Three takes us all the way back to Adam and Eve to show how and why they suffered. He then provides us with a few brief pages with examples of suffering all throughout salvation history. Chapter Four provides different purposes for suffering, i.e., punitive, probative, and disciplinary. Chapters Five and Six detail the concepts of supernatural suffering and Jesus' suffering and our participation in it. The final chapters are the most practical/beneficial as they focus on practical things you can do when you suffer, such as prayer, confession, and, trusting that God will never put you through more than you can handle.

We are all fallen human beings in a state of sin. This sin leads to suffering, and this suffering is something that will never leave us until we reach Heaven. Fortunately for us, suffering isn't the end result, but merely a spiritual tool we can use to grow closer to God. Good read, bad price

I am not sure if the price is anyone's choice in particular, but a few dollars for 6 pages is not that great. Luckily for whoever set that price, I needed another book for my paper and in that regard the analysis was pretty good and proved to be a good source to help me in my writing.

Clever storytelling approach that adds to the story

All the Missing Girls is a clever twist on the nearly saturated unreliable narrator themed thriller so prevalent these days. Two girls in the same small town in North Carolina have gone missing ten years apart from each other, and everyone in the town is wondering whether the cases are related. I think it does a disservice to All the Missing Girls to have it marketed as the next Gone Girl or Girl on the Train. I found both to be pretty easy to work out the story line and not all that compelling. All the Missing Girls is more clever by far, and the format definitely more engaging.

The story begins as Nicolette Farrell returns to Cooley Ridge to help her brother care for her ailing father and assist with the sale of her childhood home. The characters are briefly introduced, the ten-year old disappearance of Corinne (Nicolette’s best friend in high school) is described, and Annaleise Carter has just recently gone missing. Then the story flashes forward 15 days and begins to be told backward by day, Day 15, Day 14, etc. As the plot unfolds, I had to pay very close attention due to the format; with the story going backwards, I had to stop several times and get reoriented as to how all the facts fit together. As the days reverse, the disappearance of the second girl, Annaleise Carter, is investigated and explained.

All the Missing Girls was gripping, and it held my attention throughout. Unlike many in this genre, the ending was unpredictable, and not obvious by the time I was finishing the book which I really liked. Thanks to Simon & Schuster for sending me this one in exchange for an honest review

Fascinating and Haunting

To paraphrase Hannibal Lecter, we covet with our eyes, what we see. The cover of All the Missing Girls is what first caught my eye. An empty ferris wheel, in the dark, rising out of the trees into a cloudy sky. The title hinting at a mystery and likely tragedy. Then the description of two missing girls, disappearing ten years apart, but linked in the way that small town tragedies are often linked; everyone knows everyone and you never really leave. Add to that a unique narrative device of telling the story backwards, from the 15th day after the second disappearance to the 1st, and you have all the ingredients for a great story.

Megan Miranda tells a great story and she does it with interesting, flawed, even tragic characters. Characters who you can’t trust, but who you become very invested in. The story is told through the eyes of Nicolette Farrell, who left Cooley Ridge 10 years ago after the disappearance of her friend Corinne. Pulled back to help deal with her ailing father, she is no sooner back than another girl goes missing. Annaleise, the missing girl, happened to be the alibi for Nic and her brother Daniel, as well as their friends Tyler, Jackson and Bailey. All of whom were the focus of the investigation ten years earlier.

Miranda brilliant spills out the information, a drab at a time, pulling the narrative forward even as time moves backwards. It’s a little bit difficult to wrap your head around the concept. The characters already know what the reader is just finding out because the action is in their past, but your future. Add to that the fact that none of the characters is completely honest, with themselves or with each other. The story moves ahead with one bombshell after the other as layers are peeled back. Along with facts of what happened with the disappearing girls, truths about the characters and who they really are get revealed.

All the Missing Girls will haunt you even as it thrills you. There is a bit of a resemblance to Shirley Jackson and The Haunting of Hill House in the way that this small town grips you and pulls you back into its clutches even after you think you’ve escaped and moved on. This is a great story that will have you turning the pages to get to the satisfying and haunting conclusion. Highly recommended.

Uninteresting book, confusing structure

Uses annoying device of working backwards day by day. Particularly difficult when reading on kindle and unable to flick back and forth easily. Shallow and predictable character development - small town girl with rich city boyfriend, returns home to lay ghosts, meets up with old boyfriend...what could happen?

Kerry Lonsdale believes life is more exciting with twists and turns, which may be why she enjoys dropping her characters into unexpected scenarios and foreign settings. She graduated from California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, and is a founder of the Women’s Fiction Writers Association, an online community of authors located across the globe. She resides in Northern California with her husband, two children, and an aging golden retriever who’s convinced she’s still a puppy. Everything We Keep is Kerry’s first novel. A stellar debut you can't afford to miss

Finally have the time to review this book properly. If you want the short version, this is amazing fiction with so many twists and turns you'll never see the big ones coming. I actually tweeted the author while I was reading, "every time I think I know where this book is going, you pull the rug out!" This results in an usually fast-paced story (at least for women's fiction) of a woman struggling to overcome the grief of losing her childhood sweetheart - who was meant to be her husband - and figure out who she is in the wake of such terrible tragedy. But the kicker is all may not be as it seems. Everything We Keep is also a bit of a mystery novel, and it's one particularly large looming question that keeps the characters and the readers guessing.

Speaking of characters, Kerry's cast is incredibly well-developed and they feel like real people with virtues, weaknesses and plausible back story. She even made me fall in love with two men at the same time...which I knew wasn't going to end well for me! Add to that settings so vivid I want to pack up and live there and you've got an amazing story.

I also want to say something about the epilogue because so many people have cited it as a reason for giving the book a low rating. No spoilers, don't worry. A) No matter what happens in the epilogue, that alone shouldn't be a reason to trash and book if you otherwise enjoyed it. B) This is the first book in a series, so you can't expect everything to be neatly tied up. C) Women's fiction is different from romance in that it doesn't require a happily ever after. You may still get one, but life is complex, and so fiction should be as well.

Kudos to Kerry for an incredible debut that has made me a life-long fan.

I’m always pleased to give a good review: Especially when it comes on the heels of two, not so good, reviews. In this case, my review rating is not good; it’s absolutely outstanding. If I could, I’d give Everything We Keep a 7 out of 5 rating. 5 for being very good, 6 for outstanding writing and, 7 because it’s the authors first book.

Yes, not only am I in love with this book, I’ve added it to my top three books list.

Aimee Tierney is madly in love with her childhood sweetheart, James. They grew up together, he protected her at every turn and they became engaged. Just before the wedding, James must go on a business trip to Mexico. A trip that only his body returns from. So, instead of saying their vows, Aimee ends up burying James on their planned wedding day.

Devastated, Aimee spends over a year refusing to accept James death and move on with her life. Adding to this are the strange messages from a physic telling her that James is not dead.

Pushed by her friends to at least start working on a life without James, she opens a specialty caf�. They also drag her kicking and screaming back into life beyond her home and the caf�. Here, she meets Ian, a photographer that she immediately develops feelings for. Feelings that are certainly mirrored by Ian.

But the feelings and messages that James is not dead, persist. Feelings and verification of his death that she must resolve if she is ever to move on. So, two years after his purported death, Ian joins her, as she travels to Mexico to find her fianc�e, who she is now certain is not dead.

As she and Ian search for James, and the truth; secrets from their past and James’ family surface, along with her feelings for Ian and realization of what her life with James was really like.

Everything We Keep not only has a unique plot, it is full of twists and turns that will keep you guessing, especially toward the end as she and Ian seek the truth in Mexico. It is also exceptionally well written with little to no errors (I think I found one), wonderful character development and an author who has mastered show, don’t tell.

An excellent novel that kept me up until 2:30 AM to find out how it ends.

By the way, several people with bad reviews due to a lot of errors, poor editing and a love story with no mystery, must have read a different book than I did.

Well-crafted story

What an enjoyable story! A few plot twists I didn't see coming and an ending you won't forget. Well developed secondary characters make me want to read their stories too. I give it 4 stars out of 5 because the women are potty-mouths and the number of f-bombs increased as the story moved forward. By the last few chapters I was tired of it and wondered why this gifted author couldn't be more imaginative with their speech. That's really my only complaint, and anyone sensitive about this issue may wish to know before reading.
