About the Author

Catherine Dee trained�in fine art before studying landscape architecture, and today practises both. She is author of Form and Fabric in Landscape Architecture:�a visual introduction (Routledge 2001) and several articles on the relationship�between design, drawing and art. She is a founding editor of the Journal of Landscape Architecture (JoLA) (2006) and creator of its peer-reviewed visual essay section ‘Thinking Eye’. A highly regarded design teacher, she holds an academic post�in the Department of Landscape at the�University of Sheffield, UK.

Two types of serial drama are highlighted in this regard, the politically provocative dynasty drama and the culturally ambiguous domestic drama. The book also provides cross-cultural comparisons that parallel the textual and institutional strategies of transnational Chinese language TV dramas with dramas from the three leading centers of transnational television production, the US, Brazil and Mexico in Latin America, and the Korean-led East Asia region. The comparison reveals creative connections while it also explores how the emergence of a Chinese cultural-linguistic market, together with other cultural-linguistic markets, complicates the power dynamics of global cultural flows.

Big Idea; Compelling Read

A compact volume with a big idea, this book is a forceful evocation of what Stanley Rosen, in his Forward, calls the "negotiation" between State and Society in contemporary China. "After thirty years of reform," Rosen says, "state-society relations are no longer a one-way street." Zhu argues that the advance of commercial popular culture plays a leading role in this new dynamic. Here the focus is on television, as Zhu reveals how public/popular discourse is channeled through the narrative and formal content of China's most popular television programming -- serial dramas in primetime - and parallels this with the leading intellectual debates and movements of the post-reform era, and with the rhetoric and policies of the state. What Zhu finds, among other things, is that at least for now public opinion, the leading intellectual factions and the state are all more or less in line with the Hu Jintao administration's broad goals and strategies in the service of producing a "Harmonious Society."

Zhu also raises good questions about Hollywood's future role in the transnational Chinese audio-visual market; about the state's rhetoric of "One China" versus the more civilizational, less state-oriented vision of "Greater China" suggested by a pan-Chinese audio-visual audience; about whether or not China's leaders fully understand the extent to which they have invited the rest of the world to take an active interest in China's "internal affairs" as they take steps like joining the WTO and hosting the Summer Olympics; and about differences, similarities, cooperation and competition between the three centers of Chinese television production (China, Hong Kong, Taiwan). This is a scholarly work, but highly accessible, original and compelling.

Eran pocos los que en aquellos d�as se deten�an a contemplar el escaparate de Sempere e Hijos y menos todav�a quienes se aventuraban a entrar y preguntar por aquel libro perdido que les hab�a estado esperando toda la vida y cuya venta, poes�as al margen, hubiera contribuido a remendar las precarias finanzas de la librer�a.

—Yo creo que hoy ser� el d�a. Hoy cambiar� nuestra suerte —proclam� en alas del primer caf� del d�a, puro optimismo en estado l�quido.

Mi padre, que llevaba desde las ocho de aquella ma�ana batallando con el libro de contabilidad y haciendo malabarismos con l�piz y goma, alz� la vista del mostrador y observ� el desfile de clientes escurridizos perderse calle abajo.

Le observ� con incredulidad. Tal vez la sequ�a comercial que nos hab�a azotado en las �ltimas semanas hab�a terminado por afectar el sano juicio de mi progenitor.

—No me digas que le vas a permitir pasearse en gayumbos por la librer�a.

—No, no es eso. Es lo del escaparate. Ahora que lo has dicho, me has dado una idea... Quiz� a�n estemos a tiempo de salvar la Navidad.

Le vi desaparecer en la trastienda y al poco regres� pertrechado de su uniforme oficial de invierno: el mismo abrigo, bufanda y sombrero que le recordaba desde ni�o. Bea sol�a decir que sospechaba que mi padre no se hab�a comprado ropa desde 1942 y todos los indicios apuntaban a que mi mujer estaba en lo cierto. Mientras se enfundaba los guantes, mi padre sonre�a vagamente y en sus ojos se percib�a aquel bri- llo casi infantil que s�lo consegu�an arrancarle las grandes empresas.

Me cosidero un completo admirador de Ruiz Zafon, pero "El prisionero del Cielo" es un material que debimos tener tanto en La Sombra del Viento como en El Juego del Angel.
Me cuesta, encontrar una razon para que no fuera asi, solo me queda pensar que fuera cuestion de editores, y demas personajes que giran en derredor de un escritor, y que despu�s se vio que, podia constituir algo mas que ofrecer de la magnifica pluma del Sr.Zafon. Por demas esta decir que es una lectura deliciosa, como nos tiene acostumbrado este gran escritor. Como una nueva novela? ....No se acerca ni remotamente a las que le precedieron.

Abundant literature is available on immigrants from Latin America and Asia, but very little on Africans, especially those from French speaking countries in the United States. Ousmane Kane offers a case study of the growing Senegalese community in New York City. By pulling together numerous aspects (religious, ethnic, occupational, gender, generational, socio-economic, and political) of the experience of the Senegalese migrant community into an integrated analysis, linking discussion of both the homeland and host community, this book breaks new ground in the debate about postcolonial Senegal, Muslim globalization and diaspora studies in the United States. A leading scholar of African Islam, Ousmane Kane has also conducted extensive research in North America, Europe and Africa, which allows him to provide an insightful historical ethnography of the Senegalese transnational experience.

....The proper study of black history will reveal movements that parallel those of today. Black nationalism in particulr was as integral to thought in the middle of the nineteenth century as it is now.

We must begin to study the ideas of the blacks who have been consciously omitted from the historical record. Their approaches to the struggle must no longer be neglected. It makes absolutely no sense to have ten or fifteen biographies of Frederick Douglass and other black figures and not one definitive work on individuals such as Charles Langston, Frances Ellen Watkins, Sam R. Ward, Alexander Crummell, Robert Campbell, Bishop Holly, J. W. Loguen, Mammy Pleasant, the blacks who fought with John Brown, the slave rebels, and the national emigration conventions. No one would detract from the contributions of Douglass or anyone else; however, others have enriched the ideology of black struggle.

Rev. Henry Highland Garnet opened a new chapter in the black liberation movement whae he said in 1843, "Let your motto be resistance." This was the real sentiment of the black masses. Like many others who have been overlooked, Garnet was an inspirational leader in the anti-slavery movement, but he also consistently took progressive stands on vital issues from free labor to anti-imperialism."

About the Author
Brian Friel was born in Omagh, County Tyrone (Northern Ireland) in 1929. He received his college education in Derry, Maynooth and Belfast and taught at various schools in and around Derry from 1950 to 1960. He is the author of many plays that have taken their place in the canon of Irish Literature, including Philadelphia, Here I Come! (1964), Lovers (1967), Translations (1980), The Communication Cord (1982), and Dancing at Lughnasa (1990). In 1980 he founded the touring theatre company, Field Day, with Stephen Rea.

Brian Friel; the Shakespeare of the modern day.

"Philadelphia, Here I Come!" was Friel's first huge American hit and since then his other works have been awarded and performed all over North america. Most of Friel's plays take place near or around the fictional town of Balleybeg in Northern Ireland. this particular plkay is about a youbngman who is leaving the family and it;s business tomorrow to travel to America and join relatives in Philadelphia. His character is played by two actors, p0one who plays the man who speaksout loud and one who speaks his toughts and only to him. TYhis is a method of theatre that is sheer genuis and through it we are able to recognize the sort of interior conlicts we have with oiuselves. the story line is very moving while there are times with side splitting comdey.

Brian Friel is highly celebrated. his play "Dancing At Lughnasa" won all of the awards in the UK, moved to Broadway and won all of the words there. It transferred beautifullt to film with an all Irish cast with the exception of Meryl Streep= the only dialect actress whose performance is just as good in German as it is in English. His play "Faith Healer" is a completely different format but just as powerful and moving. Wkith "Philadelphia, Here I Come", we open the first page or enter the theatre and because of the title we ar expecting a particular sort of play- perhapos one of Lewis and Martin's "Road to' styles but we open to gray and dim Balleybeg and we are soon so very captivated that though the premise is intelligent (think of "The Newsroom", "Sports Night", or "Social Network" and there you have it.)

If you;re one who enjoys reading plays, this is one not to miss. It's not an acotrs edition, it;s designed for reading.

For those who don;t know, when creating a script for actors gthere should be as few stage or line directions as possible so that the actors can make choices on her own. Scripts printed for the public require stage directions for those peiple who have a hard time designing a set, light plot costumes and properties list as they read. This is the difference between an actors edition (usually published by Damuel French) and the pficial published version. This version is the latter.

I will not include any spikersm but will say that Friel has a remarkable talent for diualouge and character- they are remarkably believable- and he can take a single emotion of character flaw and develop it into a full evening of self discovery.

The Philadelphia in this play is not the Philadelphia of today. It represents new beginings- the city where broadway musicals tried out and Eugene Ormandy conducted the Philadelphia Orchestra. The state of New Jersey had not yet pulled the plug on Canden just over the Franklin Bridge so crime and druigs didn;t creep across during the night in the ghuise of gangs.

If David Crosby can call Bob Dylan the Shakespeare of song writers then i can certainly calkl Brian Friel toady''s stage Shakespeare. He is even better than Aaron Sorkin, for those of you who know television or film; Fril is the shakespeare of Mozart for those of you who are comfortable with art music. Ani DiFranco for indie music, Paul Simon for pop music and willy Wonka or Choclate.

Think it's with it? It is.

Of course this was Brian Friel's first big success. It should have been. It's about the mysteries of immigration, the loss of what's left behind, the hope of what's hoped and longed for, the inability to feel what you say and to say what you feel, love lost and given away, and how we are not what we seem, or even what we think we are. It's also about not really understanding all this and still doing something. And it's funny.
