If you're a childcare lawyer, your professional activity will inevitably involve liaison with -- and contact with -- social workers. This excellent book will help you understand the role and practice of the social worker, just we are sure it will be equally useful in familiarizing social workers with the mind-set of the lawyer and the intricacies of court proceedings with which they are frequently involved.
Its primary function, however, is to function as a guide and reference book for lawyers and other professionals who seek a fuller understanding of social work policies and procedures.
Taking a practical approach, the book aims to define and describe what constitutes good social work and of course, good decision making. As assessment is the social worker's crucial and pivotal role, the focus of the book is on the decision making process, including how the lawyer may assess whether or not the social worker in question has come to the right conclusion or possibly the wrong one.
Written by two experts in childcare law and social work issues -- one a barrister; the other a children's guardian and trainer -- the first edition of the book, published four years ago, was conceived originally in response to requests to the authors for, we would assume, a systematic explanation of the principles, procedures and terminology used by social workers, as an aid to professionals unfamiliar with them.
