Still The Best of the Heap But...

...with the renewed emphasis on infant and toddler caregiving, this text might become obsolete.

It remains relatively unchanged since the fourth edition. That's good and bad.

It's good because an instructor picking this new edition will not need to re-orient himself with the text's format, organization, and layout. Chapter 6 is still about play while Chapters 9-10 cover langauge and literacy. Even the text itself has not changed that much with the exception of an updated idea or two.

It's bad because, again, an instructor familiar with the text (like me) can't help but think "Hey! Is Dr. Brewer doing anything to update this book?". Don't get me wrong: it's the best book in the field for preschool to primary education, in my opinion. Babies and 2's, though, are the latest focus on a many state early childhood agendas (or would-be agendas). I hope Dr. Brewer updates her book on this topic.

I'm quite curious to see how the next version will turn out.

About the Author

John Steinbeck, born in Salinas, California, in 1902, grew up in a fertile agricultural valley, about twenty-five miles from the Pacific Coast. Both the valley and the coast would serve as settings for some of his best fiction. In 1919 he went to Stanford University, where he intermittently enrolled in literature and writing courses until he left in 1925 without taking a degree. During the next five years he supported himself as a laborer and journalist in New York City, all the time working on his first novel,�Cup of Gold�(1929).

After marriage and a move to Pacific Grove, he published two California books,�The Pastures of Heaven�(1932) and�To a God Unknown�(1933), and worked on short stories later collected in�The Long Valley�(1938). Popular success and financial security came only with�Tortilla Flat�(1935), stories about Monterey’s paisanos. A ceaseless experimenter throughout his career, Steinbeck changed courses regularly. Three powerful novels of the late 1930s focused on the California laboring class:�In Dubious Battle�(1936),�Of Mice and Men�(1937), and the book considered by many his finest,�The Grapes of Wrath�(1939).�The Grapes of Wrath�won both the National Book Award and the Pulitzer Prize in 1939.

Early in the 1940s, Steinbeck became a filmmaker with�The Forgotten Village�(1941) and a serious student of marine biology with�Sea of Cortez�(1941). He devoted his services to the war, writing Bombs Away (1942) and the controversial play-novelette�The Moon is Down�(1942).Cannery Row�(1945),�The Wayward Bus�(1948), another experimental drama,�Burning Bright(1950), and�The Log from the Sea of Cortez�(1951) preceded publication of the monumental�East of Eden�(1952), an ambitious saga of the Salinas Valley and his own family’s history.

The last decades of his life were spent in New York City and Sag Harbor with his third wife, with whom he traveled widely. Later books include�Sweet Thursday�(1954),�The Short Reign of Pippin IV: A Fabrication�(1957),�Once There Was a War�(1958),�The Winter of Our Discontent�(1961),Travels with Charley in Search of America�(1962),�America and Americans�(1966), and the posthumously published�Journal of a Novel: The East of Eden Letters�(1969),�Viva Zapata!(1975),�The Acts of King Arthur and His Noble Knights�(1976), and�Working Days: The Journals of The Grapes of Wrath�(1989).

Steinbeck received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1962, and, in 1964, he was presented with the United States Medal of Freedom by President Lyndon B. Johnson. Steinbeck died in New York in 1968. Today, more than thirty years after his death, he remains one of America's greatest writers and cultural figures.�

John McDonough's reading of this marvelous Steinbeck novel is not without its flaws, but they don't much diminish the charm of the performance. Tortilla Flat follows the exploits of Danny and his paisano friends, who live in squalid poverty and blissful idleness near Monterey, California. McDonough does not overact, and his gentle touch is well suited to the story. His accents and voices, however, are strangely inconsistent, as if he eventually tires of giving each character his own. An Arthurian Marvel

Tortilla Flat was an actual place in Carmel that John Steinbeck placed in Monterey. He took some stories about the paisanos (a mixture of Spanish, Indian, Mexican and Caucasian bloods) that lived in this marginal place consisting of shacks and, using the style of the Arthurian legends, spun these tales about Danny and his friends. They are meant to be humorous and serious at times, and the characters are larger than life. Certainly, no one could live as Danny, Pilon, Jesus Marie, Big Joe Portagee and the Pirate, consuming wine by the gallon, eating whatever they can steal and taking up and whoring with any woman they want, but this is hardly the point. The tales have an epic proportion to them like Malory's knights of yore but from the vantagepoint of the New World. This makes Tortilla Flat an entertaining and cleverly written book.
Danny is the central character of the book and the anchor that holds his group of friends together. They may be vagabonds but they have a moral code. An example: the Pirate lives with five dogs in a chicken coop. He takes some kindling wood into town each day and receives a quarter for it. He does not spend the money but hoards it. The paisanos estimate it to be $100 and think of stealing it, but are unable to follow the Pirate to where he has hidden the money. To get around this problem they invite the Pirate to live with him and try to discover the whereabouts of the money by suggesting it could be stolen quite easily. The Pirate eventually brings the money to the paisanos and discloses why he is saving it: the money is to fulfill a promise made to St. Francis to present a golden candlestick to a church in the saints honor. Why? Because the saint cured an illness one of his dogs had. Once the paisanos know the money is for a religious purpose they guard it diligently. The chapter in Tortilla Flat when the Pirate's vow is fulfilled is one of the most beautiful and memorable in the book.
This is a beautifully written book filled with humor and pathos. Mr. Steinbeck was criticized in writing this book by some readers who could not enter into the spirit of the book thinking he was glorifying the free and easy lives of Danny and company. This was not his intention; he was only telling stories inspired by the free spirits of the paisanos. Unfortunately for us, this criticism was bitter and Mr. Steinbeck never undertook such a book again. It is our loss that he could not give us another Tortilla Flat.

Wine, women, song and tears

I highly recommended this short novel but I would not do so for everyone. First of all, you must appreciate the novel being written in 1935 and the language spoken by the characters reflect that time period, rightly so. It only takes a short while to adapt and I found the story moving along at a nice pace as the personalities began to assume colorful portrayals.
Steinbeck presents a group of men, or paisanos living in Monterey, California after the first World War. These are poor men, not especially motivated to work for a living and have a thirsty, never ending longing for wine. They circle around Danny, the fortunate one in the group, who inherited 2 small houses from his grandfather. Having no steady job, it makes sense to him to "rent" to his buddies. His buddies don't have jobs or revenue, either, so the compensation that takes place is in the form of companionship and the collective sharing of all foods begged from the back doors of groceries and restaurants. The hawking of whatever goods they come upon that can be bartered for the prized gallon of wine serves to be their highest priority. While seemingly desperate and pathetic, these men go to no end to rationalize their predicaments, twist truths and events to be self-serving and ultimately rewarding their endeavors by securing enough wine to satisfy them all. This can be quite a challenge, and the lengths they go to to fulfill their thirsty desires are hilarious. That the reader finds love and goodness in these fellows is reflected by the skill of John Steinbeck's writing.
The book is a quick read and it was not long before I became fond and wiped away a few tears of sorrow and joy for each of them and the circumstances these men find themselves. The practise of their Catholic religion is random; they use it when they need it, commit small crimes in the name of it and dismiss the many restrictive "Thou shall not's" when seized in the throes of passion or inebriation. A greater sense of loyalty knits these men to each other. While women acquaintances come and go, the paisanos rely on each other and faithfully commit to one another. In spite of the inevitable drunken fights and arguments, the following morning beckons another day. All the sins of the previous day are (literally) forgotten and forgiven. In the dawn of the new day anything is possible, and the adventures these men get themselves into is pure comic entertainment.

Old recipe, ethnic infusion.

If there was ever a writer that understood how people's fates were inextricably tied to their land, it was Steinbeck. The familiar setting of Monterrey county introduces us to a new cast of characters, pulled together by the gravity of their birthplace. Early on, one gets that feeling that the misadventures in which Danny and his friends partake, could take place in Tortilla Flat, and nowhere else.

Like Mallory’s story of King Arthur and the knights of the round table, Tortilla Flat has its heroes, quests, damsels, and holy grail. That is the original recipe. Add beans, paisanos, “lively” women, and a whole lot of wine. Simmer and reduce. The result is a rich, yet simple and savory tale; literary comfort food for those who have visited this land before through Steinbeck’s prose. Those that long for it.

Who knew that this one valley in California would be the well to spring forth the tragic drama of the ‘Grapes of Wrath’, the biblical struggle of ‘East of Eden’, the love and friendship of ‘Cannery Row’, the Arthurian romance of ‘Tortilla’ and…well, the man himself.

And no, I am not putting the ‘cart before the horse’. These tales, these elemental forces were there long before Steinbeck allowed his artistic sensibilities to be threaded by them. And will continue to roam this land, perhaps in different finery, but eternal all the same.

Objective Overview of a Sizeable Subject

This book is a great overview of the East India Company to those who are looking for a good introduction to the subject. This book isn't aimed at hardcore academics, but more to students and the rest of us who watch the History Channel. Philip Lawson has taken an objective overview of his subject, which is important because it's easy to focus on the larger issue of colonialism.
By reading this mini-epic you will get to trace the history of the company from it's start in the Elizabethan era until it's end in the mid-1800's. The book is packed with a cast of characters ranging from humble bookkeepers to greedy heads of state. There are some nice details about the history of tea and trading (example: I had no idea that it was the English who first put tea and sugar together around the 1680's).
Now you may ask yourself why you should read this if you are an American? Well our own history starts off with the Boston tea party, which was raiding an East India Company ship. More important the books touches on the subject of monopolies, which will be of interest to anyone into modern economics. What's great about this book is that it also serves as a good introduction to other books on the subject, so if you are interested you will know where to start.

Excellent text by an author who died young

Philip Lawson is much missed. He died at age 46 with a promising career ahead and an impressive list of books and articles (most dealing with imperial topics) behind him. He was the most gifted of the younger generation of scholars who write imperial history not from the perspective of the metropole but from the periphery. This survey of the John Company constitutes the best introduction to the subject yet written.

Joseph Turow is Robert Lewis Shayon Professor of Communication at the University of Pennsylvania’s Annenberg School for Communication. This bad review is not about the book itself, just specifically the kindle edition. The kindle version of this book is full of typos. For every page there is at least one misspelled word. Words like "avid" are spelled "avoid" instead and even basic words like "the" were missing letter. I can't tell you how annoying it is to keep trying to figure out why they are saying "he" or "te". It took a lot of time for me to decipher a lot of passages because of the misspelled words. In addition to driving the grammar nazi in me crazy, some of the sections were so jumbled I couldn't even read them. I had to skip large sections of the book because it was impossible to figure out where one sentence ended and the next began. There were times when I had to skip three or four pages just to pick up a sentence but half the time I didn't have the patience to keep searching. Without a doubt this is the absolute worst kindle version of any book I have ever bought. The book itself is very helpful and well written but whoever edited this book made it unreadable.

Rented the kindle version for a class I'm currently taking. Contrary to the other comment, I have only found a few typos and none of which caused any confusion while reading the chapters (you can always report content error) so don't let that discourage you. The book is well structured and is pretty interesting. Happy reads, all! :)

It's in poor condition

I know that buying a used item should not have so much expectations on the quality. And the book is truly the same as the description which there is no words or highlight in the books. Yet, the back of the book has clearly been wet and there are even molds in some of the pages.

Intuitive and Entertaining

I found this book an excellent re-introduction to communication theory. Dr. Nassar explains esoteric subjects in a well-thought, intuitive way. Telecommunications Demystified is an accessable, well-written, and refreshing book. Other books on the subject of channel coding often gloss over examples,leaving too many details to the reader. This book however was step by step and easy to follow. I found Dr Nassar writing style refreshing.

About the Author

Jim Arlow has been programming and designing object-oriented software systems since 1990. He has created object models for blue chip companies such as British Airways and M&G. He is a respected OO consultant in Europe and has written and delivered many training courses on object technology and Java. Jim is a regular speaker at conferences such as Object World, and has been an invited speaker at University College London, City University, and the British Computer Society.

Ila Neustadt has worked in IT for British Airways for more than twenty years and has experience of all parts within the IT development life cycle. She worked in the strategy department modeling the architecture process and developing architecture training, and acted as program head for the graduate business analyst program. Ila now coordinates skills development for BA s IT staff.

About this book

The aim of this book is to take you through the process of object-oriented (OO) analysis and design using the Unified Modeling Language (UML) and the Unified Process (UP).

UML provides the visual modeling language for OO modeling, and UP provides the software engineering process framework that tells you how to perform OO analysis and design.

There is a lot to UP, and in this book we present only those aspects directly pertinent to the work of the OO analyst/designer. For details on the other aspects of UP, you should refer to Rumbaugh 1 and the other UP books in the bibliography.

In this book we show you enough UML and associated analysis and design techniques so that you can apply modeling effectively on a real project. According to Stephen J Mellor Mellor 1, there are three approaches to UML modeling.

• UML as a sketch - this is an informal approach to UML where diagrams are sketched out to help visualize a software system. It's a bit like sketching an idea for something on the back of a napkin. The sketches have little value beyond their initial use, are not maintained, and are finally discarded. You typically use whiteboards or drawing tools such as Visio and PowerPoint (www.microsoft.com) to create the informal sketches.

• UML as a blueprint - this is a more formal and precise approach whereby UML is used to specify a software system in detail. This is like a set of architect's plans or a blueprint for a machine. The UML model is actively maintained and becomes an important deliverable of the project. This approach demands the use of a real modeling tool such as Rational Rose (www.rational.com) or MagicDraw UML (www.magicdraw.com).

• UML as executable - using Model Driven Architecture (MDA), UML models may be used as a programming language. You add enough detail to UML models so that the system can be compiled from the model. This is the most formal and precise use of UML, and, in our view, it is the future of software development. In this approach, you need an MDA-enabled UML tool such as ArcStyler (www.arcstyler.com). MDA is beyond the scope of this book, although we discuss it briefly in Section 1.4.

Our focus in this book is on UML as a blueprint. The techniques you learn will also apply to using UML as an executable. Having learned UML as a blueprint, you will naturally be able to use UML as a sketch should you need to. We have tried to make our presentation of UML and UP as straightforward and accessible as possible.

Conventions

To help you navigate through the book we have provided each chapter with a roadmap in the form of a UML activity diagram. These diagrams indicate reading activities and the order in which sections might be read. We cover activity diagrams in detail in Chapter 14, but Figure 1 should be sufficient to let you understand the roadmaps.

Most of the diagrams in this book are UML diagrams. The annotations, in blue, are not part of UML syntax.

We have provided notes in the margin to highlight important information. We have used the UML note icon for this.

Fast Track is a quick and efficient way to read this book. You may be pleasantly surprised at how much you can pick up! Note that Fast Track works best if you can first formulate a clear idea of the information you want to obtain. For example "I want to understand how to do use case modeling."

If you need to know a particular part of UML or learn a particular technique, we have provided a detailed index and table of contents that should help you locate the information you need quickly and efficiently. The text is carefully cross-referenced to help you to do this.

Revision

There are two strategies for revision with this text.

• If you need to refresh your knowledge of UML as quickly and efficiently as possible, read the outline summaries of each chapter in the "What we have learned" section. When you don't understand something, go back and read the appropriate section.

• If you have more time, you can also browse through each chapter studying the diagrams and reading the margin notes.

Dipping

If you have a few minutes to spare, you might pick up the book and open it at random. We have tried to ensure that there is something interesting on every page. Even if you already know UML quite well, you may still discover new things to learn.

a natural union of UML, UP and OO design

UML has grown. A few years ago, when UML was just getting accepted, a book on how to use it would have been much thinner. But the successful broad uptake of UML led to its semantic notation being expanded. What the authors give us here is a thorough exposition of UML 2.0 and how to use it.

As you might expect, there are numerous examples in UML. Which, to many readers, might be more understandable than a mere abstract diagram. But the book is more than just about explaining the UML semantics. It also goes into the Unified Process for running a project, and how this can be documented in UML. By doing so, the authors hope to better enable an understanding of both.

There is also something else, related to the above, but sufficiently different and important to warrant notice. If you write in any object oriented language, it requires certain skills in designing classes and how they interact. Part 4 of the book concerns these issues, which it discusses under the rubric of "Design". A good explanation of the basic concepts. Like inheritance versus aggregation, or inheritance versus interfaces. Or why the lack of multiple inheritance in a language like C# or Java is not necessarily a deficiency.

Amazing read. I have ridden FJ 3times (2 in 2010, 1 in 2014), but I've never known some of the secrets shared in this book. Great job Mr. Ross for enlightening the general public about this awesome attraction!!!

book is great! ride is awesome, rules, not so much

informative and an interesting read, a little more than i was willing to pay to be honest for the book,( $3 less than the Universal Orlando 2014 guide which covers all the resort) The ride itself was honestly Interesting to ride, but in my opinion the draw is the queue and with all these things you WANT memories of they do not allow any personal items. A way around it is to have someone not ride in your line and give them your camera when they have to exit. or do what i did. hide a "security" pouch under your clothes, and have your cell phone, or a SMALL camera in there pouch where it's secured and not going to go flying off. I do not like being told i'm not allowed my money or anything else in a line.
