Full of information, but a challenge to read

Start out with the conclusion -indeed, as the conclusion is merely a few pages, I would skim it again a couple of times as you read the book. I chose the book because I wanted to learn more about medieval economic life of northern cities in the Baltic. This book is full of information.
First, since the table of contents is not listed in the description of the book, I will post it next. I know how unsure I feel about purchasing a book when there are so few details about a book, but merely a title!

There are few, if any, sources in English that provide as comprehensive a few of the Hansa. (This book is an English translation of the original French version.) This book gave me a much better picture of the what the Hansa did, where it did it and included a vast array of specifics. Honestly, an editor would have been a good asset for the author. While the detail of information is appreciated (350+ pages!) and seeming quite scarce (in English) on the economic aspects of the Hansa, the "flow" or lack thereof of the book makes it difficult to digest. It is for that reason I suggest to readers that they read the conclusion a few times as you read the book, because it tends to remind you of the overall picture. It adds "significance" to much of the detail in the book.
One thing that is terrific are the translations of selected primary documents! They help paint a less academic, though more vivid picture of what the Hansa had done while they existed.
I recommend the book for anyone interested in a comprehensive view of the economic aspects of the Hansa. It describes why they succeeded to the extent they did, what and how they traded and the factors that lead to their demise.
